Brian Wilson Disavows Trump’s Beach Boys Benefit in California
By Chris Willman - Variety
10/18/20

It will be fun, fun, fun under the California sun for many well-heeled attendees at today’s Donald Trump fundraiser in Newport Beach — but not for Beach Boys Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, who are chagrined that the touring version of the group currently headed up by Mike Love will be headlining the campaign benefit.

“We have absolutely nothing to do with the Trump benefit today in Newport Beach. Zero,” Wilson and Jardine said to Variety through a spokesperson. “We didn’t even know about it and were very surprised to read about it in the Los Angeles Times.”

The Los Angeles Times reported Sunday morning that the Beach Boys would be the main attraction performing for the president and his supporters at the Orange County campaign event, with tickets ranging from $2,800 per donor to $150,000 a couple for co-chair status. As hardcore Beach Boys fans know, the group booked for the tony fundraiser is a licensed touring edition led by Love, who has not been shy about appearing with Trump in the past.

Wilson and Jardine have toured together in recent years, also performing Beach Boys material but under Wilson’s name. The last time all the surviving members performed together as the Beach Boys was for a 50th anniversary tour in 2012. At the close of that, Love chose to continue touring with an un-reunited lineup under the Beach Boys’ name, for which he holds a license for concert purposes.

While some have been surprised that Trump would even visit as blue a state as California this close to the election, the Times’ article pointed to the huge potential cash haul that the president is expected to reel in from today’s benefit, badly needed as he trails Joe Biden badly in fundraising. “Everyone assumes he’s going to go to battleground states,” Jon Fleischman, a former state GOP official, told the Times. “No one really thinks about how Orange County, California, is an ATM machine. So people are pretty excited.”

This isn’t the first instance of Wilson and Jardine distancing themselves from a controversial or politically divisive gig booked by Love’s edition of the Beach Boys. In February, both Wilson and Jardine officially signed on to a Change.org petition urging a boycott of the touring Beach Boys, after Love and company booked a headlining gig at the Safari Club International Convention in Reno, Nevada, where noted safari hunting enthusiast Donald Trump Jr. was the keynote speaker. “This organization supports trophy hunting, which both Al and I are emphatically opposed to,” Wilson said in a statement at the time. “There’s nothing we can do personally to stop the show, so please join us in signing the petition.”

In the past, Love has defended his support for Trump, and once famously posed for a thumbs-up photo with him with the Washington Monument in the background.

“I don’t have anything negative to say about the president of the USA,” Love said in a 2017 interview, when Uncut magazine asked him if he had any points of disagreement with Trump. “We did attend the inauguration. [His version of the Beach Boys headlined one of Trump’s inaugural balls.] That was a moving experience. I understand there are so many factions and fractious things going on – the chips will fall where they may. But Donald Trump has never been anything but kind to us. We have known him for many a year. We’ve performed at some of his venues at fundraisers and so on.”

Love’s Beach Boys have recently been doing drive-in-style concerts with actor John Stamos as a special guest. Bruce Johnston, who joined the Beach Boys in 1965, has also been performing with Love and is the other veteran of the group’s early days to be part of the current touring lineup.

Evidently I'm the only one who doesn't.

It's lots of fun seeing there are new posts on a half-dozen threads and being unable to access any of them.

I do know from past experience that image links from some sites simply won't display properly here in most cases. Facebook appears to be one of them, so I've stopped posting fun visuals I find over there. Twitter can be problematic as well.

Trump abruptly ends '60 Minutes' interview before taping joint appearance with Pence
By Kaitlan Collins and Khalil Abdallah, CNN
Tue October 20, 2020

President Donald Trump abruptly ended a solo interview with CBS News' "60 Minutes" Tuesday and did not return for an appearance he was supposed to tape with Vice President Mike Pence, according to multiple sources familiar with what happened.

After camera crews set up at the White House on Monday, Trump sat down with host Lesley Stahl for about 45 minutes on Tuesday before he abruptly ended the interview and told the network he believed they had enough material to use, according to two sources.

CBS News did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment.

Vice President Joe Biden and California Sen. Kamala Harris were also interviewed by "60 Minutes" and all four are scheduled to appear in the same program on Sunday. While Biden and Harris taped their interviews separately, Trump and Pence were scheduled to appear on camera together, like they did four years ago, for a walk and talk session. But Trump did not return for the appearance with Pence, sources said.

The interview is slated to air this Sunday.

In a 2018 interview, Stahl challenged Trump on his views of climate change and Russian election interference. While it became contentious at times, Trump completed the sit-down.

Stahl previously said that during an off-camera conversation with Trump in 2016, when he was running for President, he admitted his attacks on the press were meant to discredit negative stories that emerged about him.

"He said, 'You know why I do it? I do it to discredit you all and demean you all so when you write negative stories about me, no one will believe you.' He said that," Stahl said.

He is clearly having mental problems. And before we all note that he's always had mental problems, what we're seeing following his COVID illness and treatment is different and worse than it was before. He is seriously impaired.

Tennessee voters were challenged at the polls for wearing Black Lives Matter and ‘I Can’t Breathe’ shirts, election official says

By Kim Bellware
Oct. 20, 2020

A poll worker in Memphis was fired last week after interfering with early voters who wore T-shirts and masks with slogans supporting Black Lives Matter, according to a Shelby County election official.

Details about the incident remained unclear Tuesday, including how many people were affected. Earlier reports indicated voters had been turned away at the Dave Wells Community Center in north Memphis last week, but no county election board officials were on hand to verify whether the prospective voters ended up casting their ballots, Shelby County Election Commission spokeswoman Suzanne Thompson told The Washington Post on Tuesday.

“Our voters are not going to be intimidated. We’re doing everything we can so that every voter in Shelby County can exercise their right,” Thompson said.

The poll worker “of his own volition” was seen telling people late last week that they had to turn their T-shirt or mask inside out if it said “Black Lives Matter,” according to Thompson. A separate poll worker who worked the check-in table and was believed to be friends with the fired poll worker did not show up for work the next day, Thompson said.

The incident occurred as Tennessee residents across the state have set records for early voting since the polls opened last Wednesday. In Shelby County, at least 132,000 people have cast early ballots as of Tuesday — nearly double the number of the first five days of early voting in 2016, according to data from the Tennessee secretary of state.

Thompson said county officials learned of the incident after a witness reported it to the election commission.

When county officials reminded the poll worker, who has not been identified, of the training that all poll workers undergo — and which this year specifically addressed that racial justice slogans are permitted at the polls — he pushed back, Thompson said. She described the poll worker as expressing his belief that Black Lives Matter and the slogan “I Can’t Breathe” were “political statements connected to the Democratic Party.”

The issue garnered more attention after Antonio Parkinson, a Democratic member of the Tennessee legislature, referred to the incident on his Facebook page and praised the Shelby County Election Commission for firing the poll worker.

Electioneering, or engaging in activity that supports a particular candidate or party, is broadly prohibited at the polls, though specific rules about what voters can say, wear or display as they cast their ballots vary by state.

Tennessee’s electioneering laws bar campaign materials that support a specific political party or any candidate or position that appears on the ballot. Election officials in Shelby County had previously discussed slogans as part of the county’s broader plan to counteract any potential voter intimidation or voter suppression, Thompson said.

Black Lives Matter is permissible, as it does not reflect a specific party or candidate, but a person wearing a “Make America Great Again” shirt would have to cover it up before voting since the slogan is known to be connected directly to a candidate who appears on the November ballot, Thompson said.

Kristen Clarke, the president of the National Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, praised the county’s swift action in firing the poll worker and called his actions a form of voter suppression.

“It was targeting a voter who merely opposed racial injustice,” Clarke told The Post. “It’s something to keep an eye on given the racially charged moment we’re in.”

Clarke echoed Thompson’s explanation of Tennessee’s electioneering laws, noting that voters are still free to express personal views when they vote as long as they do not pertain to individuals or questions on the ballot.

“People are free to wear T-shirts saying ‘Stay in school’ or ‘Smoking is bad for your health.’ There can be a range of messages. And there’s nothing in Tennessee law that would ban a voter from communicating support for racial justice,” she said.

The highly polarized political climate and a high-stakes election have put both Republicans and Democrats on alert over election integrity. Thompson said that last week’s incident in Memphis was the first of which she was aware. A spokeswoman with the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee said the group is monitoring closely for election interference but have not received complaints like the incident in Memphis.
