Is the R.R. a nod to Tolkein?

Boy, if I had time to read books, these sound very good....

I did read the entire LOR trilogy before the films came out and am glad I did.

Nope, his name is George Raymond Richard Martin.

I found I got hooked quickly to the first of the GOT books, which are properly titled the A Song of Ice and Fire series. The second and third are excellent as well. Book 4 is a bit of a mystery as many new plot lines and characters are introduced, but are not continued in Book 5. Perhaps they were meant to be dealt with in 6 and 7, but as I said, these last two books may never be completed.

While Major League Baseball considers changes to the game (including a 20-second pitch clock, DH in both leagues, etc.), it's nice to see that some folks are simply going about making baseball more colorful.

The American League isn't baseball. The next thing you know they'll have 40 man rosters and designated fielders and runners.

I was just reading a list of free agents who had signed with each club and for how much. I'm seeing journeymen sign for $4 M for one year. Middle relief pitcher $10 for 2 years. They claim the owners are colluding to hold salaries down and especially for the high profile players like Harper. I've read elsewhere that the ten-year contracts for players in their mid-twenties are gone because their abilities start to dwindle at 30 or a little more.

I have no sympathy for those over-paid greedy bastards.

This might be appropriate on the RIP thread, but I figured it belonged here.

From Bleacher Report:

Dodgers Legend and Former NL MVP Don Newcombe Dies at 92

Newcombe made his MLB debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1949. He was named NL Rookie of the Year after going 17-8 with a [sign in to see URL] ERA and five shutouts in 38 appearances.

After making the NL All-Star team four times in his first five years and winning the 1955 World Series, Newcombe made history in his sixth season. The New Jersey native won the first-ever Cy Young Award in 1956 and was named MVP that same season thanks to a 27-7 record and [sign in to see URL] ERA in 268 innings.

That would be the peak of Newcombe's career. He spent one more full season with the Dodgers before being traded to the Cincinnati Reds midway through 1958. He was with the Reds for three seasons until his contract was sold to the Cleveland Indians in August 1960.

Newcombe lost two years of his playing career from 1952 to 1953 serving in the military during the Korean War.

I well remember him.

I was talking with a guy on the Ole Miss sports forum about watching Aparicio play when I lived in Memphis and went to the old Memphis Chicks games. We came up with a list of guys that we both saw with Memphis and other teams in the league that made it to the majors.

My University of Colorado Buffaloes didn't make it to the NCAA tournament, but the men's basketball team DID advance to the quarter-finals of the ]National Invitation Tournament (NIT).

Mr. Queue and I attended the game on Monday night, and it was a good one! Tonight we play the University of Texas, in Austin. Sure would be fun if the Buffs could win again!

Good luck to the Buffs! If Texas never won another game in anything it wouldn't bother me.

Speaking of Ole Miss, CU's former head football coach has moved to your alma mater, Cooter. And a friend of ours, Katie, has joined him there as the educational supervisor for athletes -- a job she held here at CU under coach Mac.

CU's loss is your gain.

We were very happy to get Mac back. He's coached here before and I believe his Dad may have. I forget stuff these [sign in to see URL].

Back to football for a moment. The NFL has expanded the review policy to include pass interference, offensive and defensive penalties both called and uncalled. The calls or non calls are subject to challenge and to official reviews within the final two minutes of the halves. Finally. Yahoo Sports has a couple of stories on the changes.

Brick, I was listening to a sports talk radio show while driving around earlier today and the host theorized that this new rule will give an unfair edge to teams rallying in the final moments of a game. His point was that the "Hail Mary" play will unavoidably result in a pass interference call at the goal line. Heads you complete the pass and win, tails you demand a review and hope for the call.

Peter, not allowing challenges and replay on penalties at the speed at which the game is now played is undermining the integrity of the game, imo. When the better team loses a game by virtue of a blown call or non call I feel like the fans are being cheated. I want the teams to determine the outcome, not the officials. There are downsides, I agree, but at the end of the day, I’m in favor of it. I reserve the right to change my mind after I’ve watched a few games with the new rules in place of course. 🙂
