Re: Musings

I went to see the musical, "Mama Mia," twice when I lived in San Francisco. EVERYBODY in the audience was standing up and dancing to sing along with "Dancing Queen." And yes, we were all smiling...

Re: Musings

In the grand experiment in self governance conceived and initiated by the Founding Fathers there was a presumption that discourse and policy would be based on reason. I don’t believe that they ever considered the possibility of fantasy replacing reason in the mindset of not only those elected to serve but also their followers.

For far too long too many of us have stood silent while many on the Right engaged in a decades long assault on the truth. We watched as that group grew. The weapons they have used in this war are ridicule, vilification, fear, anger, and divisiveness, their enemy, solidarity. The worst nightmare that the Trumpists can imagine is a unified Left. And so the Left is vilified, falsely characterized as a monolith, and defined by them as the socialist enemy. And enmity begets enmity. The result of this ongoing insanity is a completely dysfunctional government. By dysfunctional I mean unresponsive. And an unresponsive government is a failure.

The people who subscribe to Trumpism call themselves Republicans for the most part, although I suspect that there are many who have in the past identifed as Republicans who do not see this newly formed group as being made up of kindred spirits. The core principles espoused by the likes of William Buckley, George Will, Charles Krauthammer, Ronald Reagan, Peggy Noonan, Bill Kristol, and many others, have been abandoned by those who now merely use the Party name for their own selfish ends, giving new meaning to the phrase Republican in name only. They have sacrificed their ability to reason on the altar of the Cult of Trump. They should be rebranded and from now on be called Trumpists. Whatever is left of the Republican Party should disavow them and call them what they are, members of a cult of personality, who have completely abandoned the idea of Public Service and the ideals and principles of a Constitutional Republic.

Outstanding analysis, Brick. I wish it weren't so, but it is.

Wouldn't Trump be thrilled to have a political party named for him? He might make the suggestion himself.

Thanks, Robbie. And yes, Belle, to our egomaniac-in-chief having a Party named after him would only be fitting.

maybe a career as a tour guide wasn't for me.

I read that by law, you have to turn on your headlights if it's raining in Sweden.

How the hell should I know if it's raining in Sweden?

This is so good, Brick.... I completely agree.

Thanks for the kind words, Lis.

I had a thought. In other words my daydreaming led me to the following fantastic idea. 🙂 I imagined the President of the United States urging the states to make allowances for front line, essential workers to have their voices heard in this election. He expresses a desire to maximize participation in the electoral process with the aim of insuring that the vote actually represents the will of all of the people. He urges policies that make voting easier for the masses, increasing hours, adding polling places, providing drop boxes, and accommodating mail in voting. Pretty wild, huh?

Re: Musings

Occasionally I burn out. I can't take one more outrage, one more piece of breaking news, one more hearing... none of it.

And that's where I've been this week. I haven't watched one minute of the Amy Coney Barrett hearings. A couple of times I turned on MSNBC or CNN to see if there was other news, but evidently there isn't. Just Amy Coney Barrett.

I watched my local news channel at 5:00 PM to see a massive truck overturned on I-5, blocking the northbound lanes (or was it the southbound lanes? I don't care) of I-5 near Marysville, and I was almost happy to see it. I see the weather is deteriorating starting Thursday night and lasting through the weekend. Good. None of it has anything to do with national politics.

I'm old. Leave me alone. Get off my lawn.

I’ve been exhausted for a while, Robbie. It seems like angst is being pumped into the national psyche from all sides. The media promotes it. Some of that I think is a reaction to the predictions it wrongly sold in 2016. And the rest of it is political gamesmanship. It sucks.
