Thanks for the kind words. It is great to see the new faces, all the more because they are of articulate, civil people.

Just Lis

My name is Lisa. I've never been a fan of the "a" at the end, so it's just "Lis," pronounced "Lease" (NOT Liz or Liss).

I'm 54 and a retired 26-year high school AP US Government and AP Micro/Macroeconomics teacher. (Advanced Placement is college-level coursework for high school students, who can earn college credit.) I am now a member of the school board for an urban school district in north-central Indiana.

Brett and I have been married 33 years and have two sons. Andrew (23) is working in Illinois as a finance assistant for a Democratic member of Congress. Cameron (20) begins work Tuesday in Pennsylvania as a musical instrument repair technician. We are brand new empty-nesters. My Mom has been staying with us since mid-July, when she suffered a series of falls after food poisoning. We're hoping she will decide to move in with us permanently.

I write a lot of economic education materials for national publishers and other national and state entities: textbooks, teacher manuals, curriculum, individual lessons, and national exam and exam-prep questions.

I have gotten involved in a lot of local volunteer and civic activities, including serving on the Board of Directors for a local credit union, and for a Community Concerts organization, and for our local Kiwanis club. I'm the recording secretary for a society of women educators, serve on the Head Start Policy Council and the school district's Employee Benefits Committee, write the monthly newsletter for Kiwanis, and will be Vice-President of the local Kiwanis Club starting next month. I volunteer for Meals on Wheels and write letters every two weeks for 50 seniors in an adopt-a-grandparent program. I also send cards for our school district's staff support group. I should buy stock in the Post Office, LOL.

I lean hard to the left politically -- except for international trade and drug legalization. But I have split every ticket I have ever voted -- except 2014. I have even entered Republican primaries three times to support Republican Senate (Lugar) and Presidential (Huntsman) candidates. But I know I'm a little blue fish swimming in bright red waters in Indiana, so I do my part to support the best candidates, regardless of party.

I found my way onto the internet on an OJ Simpson board in 1996. I kid you not. Trying to convince the true believers of Simpson's guilt was good practice for trying to convince the Trump true believers of reality. A friend suggested I might enjoy folks on the TOL board, I met Miz Robbie in the education threads, and the rest is history.

And may I please say, "WOOHOO for NoseRose!" I hereby relinquish my role as "youngster" of the board to our forty-something member! emoticon

Thanks to all of you for joining and for sharing your stories. I learned something new about every one of the people I've known for decades, LOL. And I'm really enjoying getting to know those of you who are new to me. emoticon

Re: Introduce yourself

Lis, you better get a job so you can get some rest! You remind me of my sister, who retired from teaching at 65 and then took on so many volunteer jobs that she seemed to have less free time than she had when she was working.

She finally retired from volunteer work as an ombudsman for the State of California nursing homes at the age of 80, and decided to get married the next year. She was married in May in a vineyard in Woodland, California, in the most beautiful wedding I have ever seen.

I'm envious of your exciting working life and your exciting retirement life. Economics makes my eyes glaze over, but I'm sure you can explain it as well as John Kenneth Galbraith (the only economist who does not make my eyes glaze over, probably because his writing style is so felicitous that he makes me forget I'm reading about economics.) In any case, you KNOW all of that. And you've done it all while raising two accomplished sons.

I expect to learn a lot from you on this board.

Re: Introduce yourself

Hi all I am Just Kay oddly enough my real name is Kay. I am slightly younger than Robbie and have been around on and off since the TOL days. Born in Seattle I graduated Univ. of Washington class of 72, a waste of time mostly cause never really used it for much. Married 47 years to same guy, not always easy but we hung in there. Have 2 daughters, one here in Selah, Wa near us, the other in North Bend who has a little piece of heaven on the banks of the Snoqualmie River. We have two granddaughter, 15 and 13 who live near us and who keep me busy as I am the taxi for the next year or so. Grandson is 5 and started kinder today. I am pretty much as liberal as you can be, hoping for trump's early retirement. I don't get here as often as I would like, always seem to be busy with something. Welcome to all the new folks!

Hi, Kay. I'm Belle, in Oak Harbor. Have you got that dreadful yellowish haze in your air today from the wildfires? I feel as if I'm wearing sunglasses with yellow lenses.

But Washington is a wonderful state, isn't it? A good state to be a liberal in. Where exactly is Selah?

Hi Belle! welcome. Selah is just outside Yakima an unfortunate very red part of the state. Your air is better than ours, we are getting it from Cle-Elum, Chinook Pass and Oregon can barely see a hill just a few blocks away. My area not too fond of us liberals but there are some of us here!

Ooh! (On both counts.) You must have some lively discussions.

And thanks for the welcome. It's great to be here at TZ, among all these interesting people.

Thanks, Bellelettres! I try to follow the path of Paul Krugman, with his outstanding ability to explain complicated economic theory in words that real people can understand. So many people with that PhD after their names work so hard to impress people with their fancy words that they forget they're supposed to be communicating.

Are you related to Ward Just? Whatever happened to him? Is he still writing political novels?

I like Krugman, too.

LOL......that was me, and I weighed a lot more than 265 when that was taken, if I remember correctly. My weight has fluctuated, sometimes a lot over time. I'm told that diabetes has given me the big stomach, or at least has something to do with it.
