Yeah. I give Biden big points for admitting that Hunter had a drug program and has worked his program. But damn, kids have ALWAYS been off limits.

Wait. Whoa. Some of the anchors think Trump was talking about BEAU when Trump said that he was thrown out of the military and given a dishonorable discharge??? HUH??? That's going to get REALLY ugly play if that's who Trump meant. I thought he meant Hunter....

I assumed it was Hunter, but not sure. But that thing Nicole Wallace said about assault/abuse is spot on. Anyone who has experienced abuse recognizes that Trump is the classic abusive personality, flogging the American public daily in one way or another, and saying "you weren't nice to me and you make me do this to you."

Like a drunk, after getting my disgust with Trump (alcohol) off my chest, I went right back to it. It wasn't as hard to watch the second time. Maybe I was inoculated. Anyhow, the commentary by Rachel and Nicolle and Joy afterward was wonderful. I loved the way they excoriated him in detail, quoting and marveling, but my favorite thing was Rachel's observation that Trump "didn't bite the head off a bat."

Ha! I missed that line, Belle!

COMPLETELY agree with you, Badhorsie. I wonder how many women (especially) saw something in Trump tonight that reminds them very much of a husband, a father, an abuser of any kind.... But in THIS case, they can do something about it.

Tonight was just dark. THIS is the President of the United States of America and it's not a certainty we can get rid of him.

How is it possible that 40+% of voters support this disgusting person?

I agree. This was dark. And, like you I can’t understand how any rational human being can continue to support this sad excuse for a man.

If you've traveled around America, you come to realize it has its darkness. Full of fear, hypocrisy, ignorance, judgment, privilege, ego, power, wealth, corruption.

And then there's the light. Compassion, art, humanity, knowledge, understanding, philanthropy, altruism, etc.

I know a couple of people who support Trump who seem like totally decent people. I don't understand it.

Yes, that's the inexplicable part. I have neighbors I adore and they're Trump supporters. They're bright, warm, caring, good neighbors. And they support Trump. It is beyond my ability to understand.

Lauren and I watched the whole hideous thing. I gave Biden a grade of "B", which I think is the best he's capable of. Under the circumstances, it was an admirable performance. Still, he ended up climbing into the mud with Trump on several occasions and that didn't help matters. I'm not sure I blame him too much for that though. Trump was obnoxious.

Donald Trump intentionally blew up the debate from start to finish. I think Biden did the best he could against the horrific backdrop set by Trump. It’s impossible to evaluate Biden’s performance in any meaningful way in that debacle which is exactly .what Trump was trying to do. He was trying to obfuscate the points of contrast between him and Biden for obvious reasons. What Trump did was present the choice in this election as starkly as it has been presented to date. It’s in the hands of the electorate.

Chris Wallace was also in an impossible position. He was powerless to enforce the rules. The rules are established by mutual agreement but there is no enforcement mechanism in place to empower the moderator to maintain control of the process. I felt sorry for him.

Lis should moderate the next debate.

Kids were frightened, educators were horrified — and there was this: ‘PLEASE let an experienced teacher moderate the next debate’

By Valerie Strauss

September 29, 2020

Kids were scared, teachers were horrified — and there was this among the reactions to the Tuesday night showdown between President Trump and former vice president Joe Biden: “PLEASE let an experienced teacher moderate the next debate."
In fact, some of the most interesting reactions to Trump’s bullying behavior and moderator Chris Wallace’s inability to control the event came from the education world, with comparisons made between Trump’s behavior and that of kindergartners, and between Wallace’s performance and how a kindergarten teacher would have handled it.

Here’s a fraction of the reactions on Twitter that appeared right after the debate:

Rebecca Boone

@boiseboone

Beginning to think we should only hire fed-up moms and experienced grade school school teachers as debate moderators. Just try interrupting them.

Amy King

@kinghistorycchs

As an American history teacher, US Presidential debates are GAME ON. I am 45 min into this and I want to throw up. #Debates2020 #debatedisaster

Rinkytone

@Rinkytone

Any debate teacher in any class in any school at any grade level in the country, if not the world, would have thrown Donald Trump out of the room in 30 seconds, shut the debate down, given him an “F,” and turned him over to the Vice Principal for discipline, if not expulsion.

Bailey Curie

@baileeeycurie_1

Donald Trump throwing a consecutive 90+ minute temper tantrum and Chris Wallace’s debate performance tonight is a great reminder that kindergarten teachers are underpaid

Tessa Lucero

@tessalou22

My mom is a kindergarten teacher and easily would’ve had this situation under control. Also, fun fact she paid more in taxes than Trump

Rosie is STAYING HOME

@BkPhilanthropy

Watching the debate? This teacher has seen enough to evaluate. Chris Wallace gets an F. Trump gets suspended & fails. He didn’t study. I’ve seen this play hundreds of times. Biden gets to go back in the room and finish. This teacher needs a drink AND migraine relief.

AprilDRyan

@AprilDRyan

I say this respectfully, but Chris Wallace has no control over this debate. I applaud Joe Biden for trying to be grace under fire, but this debate needed NBA referees to help navigate it. The world is watching this circus and it’s embarrassing.

Frank Lesser

@sadmonsters

On the plus side, teachers can play that debate for kindergartners and tell them that they, too, can someday become president, and they don’t even have to leave kindergarten

𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝

@missakind

A kindergarten teacher might be more successful moderating this debate. I imagine they would walk over and unplug the microphone and let Trump know that he can have it back when it’s his turn.

Dena Simmons

@DenaSimmons

I feel like this debate is poorly moderated & we need a Black woman teacher whose been teaching for 35+ years to come through with l her warm-demander stance and moderate this like it should be.

Post-debate CNN poll: Six in 10 say Biden won the debate

By Jennifer Agiesta, CNN Polling Director
September 30, 2020

(CNN)Six in 10 debate watchers said former Vice President Joe Biden did the best job in Tuesday's debate, and just 28% say President Donald Trump did, according a CNN Poll of debate watchers conducted by SSRS.

In interviews with the same voters conducted before the debate, 56% said they expected Biden to do the better job while 43% expected that Trump would.

The post-debate result is about the same as the outcome of a post-debate poll in 2016 after the first debate between Trump and Hillary Clinton. In that poll, 62% thought Clinton won the debate, 27% said Trump did.

About two-thirds said Biden's answers were more truthful than Trump's (65% Biden to 29% Trump), and his attacks on the President were more frequently seen as fair. Overall, 69% called Biden's attacks on Trump fair while just 32% said Trump's attacks were fair.

The survey is designed to be representative of those registered voters who watched Tuesday's debate, it does not represent the views of all Americans.

The voters who watched the debate were more partisan than Americans as a whole -- 36% identified as independents or non-partisans compared with around 40% in the general public, and the group of debate watchers was more Democratic than a typical survey of all adults, with 39% identifying as Democrats and 25% as Republicans.

Beyond overall praise for his performance, voters who watched the debate largely said that they trusted the former vice president over the current President on major issues covered in the debate, including racial inequality (66% trust Biden more, 29% Trump), health care (66% Biden to 32% Trump), the coronavirus outbreak (64% Biden to 34% Trump) and Supreme Court nominations (54% Biden to 43% Trump).

On the economy, though, voters who watched the debate split, with 50% saying they preferred Biden and 48% Trump.

Overall, 63% who watched the debate said Biden had the better plan for solving the country's problems (30% said Trump did), and that he seemed to be the stronger leader (55% Biden to 43% Trump).

It's hard to imagine how 28% of the debate watchers thought Trump did a better job than Biden.

Exclusive poll: Biden won the debate convincingly
A decisive win, powered mostly by character.
By Matthew Yglesias - Vox
Sep 30, 2020, 11:30am EDT

A new poll by Data for Progress provided exclusively to Vox shows that viewers thought Democratic nominee Joe Biden decisively won Tuesday’s first presidential debate against President Donald Trump, by a 52-39 margin.

The poll surveyed debate watchers but then weighted the demographics of the survey group to the population of likely voters in November. Most pollsters don’t do this, which ends up skewing their results toward Democrats because left-leaning college graduates are disproportionately likely to watch debates.

But even with the more Trump-friendly weighting, the poll shows a clear win for Biden and, not coincidentally, a fairly overwhelming sense that Biden’s conduct during the debate was more presidential.

When DFP asked about the actual policy exchanges during the debate, Biden’s performance was somewhat weaker than his topline numbers.

Respondents preferred Biden on nominating someone to the Supreme Court, for example, but did so by a relatively narrow 48-40 margin; he was also the winner on “the integrity of the election” by a 49-36 margin. Those are good numbers, but smaller than his wins on character questions:

53 percent of respondents said Biden mostly told the truth, while only 36 percent said the same about Trump.

62 percent said that Biden is “a decent man” versus 38 percent for Trump.

Last but by no means least, on the question of which candidate came off as “more mentally sharp and stable,” Biden held a narrow lead. This is significant because the Trump campaign has spent months trying to portray the former vice president as over the hill.

Data for Progress also asked a series of questions regarding whether various moments from the debate are likely to influence voters’ decisions in November. On the economy, race and policing, Covid-19, candidates’ tone, and candidates’ style of communication, Biden was universally preferred.

Trump performed best when he spoke about the economy, where 34 percent of respondents said the back-and-forth made them more likely to support him versus 38 percent who said they were more likely to support Biden. The biggest gap in Biden’s favor came on the tone question, where Biden had a 42-34 edge — including advantages for Biden with white voters and male voters.

Historically, debates have only a modest influence on election outcomes. But as measured by this survey, Trump experienced essentially a top-to-bottom fiasco. He entered the debate behind, and he failed to pick up any support that might meaningfully help him on Election Day.

I sat down and watched the whole thing, and that was a real chore. To his credit, Biden at least tried to outline a few policy ideas and didn't take Trump's bait too much. He did much better in that regard than I probably would have.

Trump was nothing beyond belligerent, bullying and bloviating. Not a single policy detail. He doesn't have a plan for anything. He thinks global warming is about clean air and water. He won't tell the Proud Boys to go away. He blurts out the same busted talking points over and over again like they might suddenly make sense to somebody.

Trump is literally the furthest thing I can imagine from an actual leader. If I worked for him, I would quit. If he worked for me, I would fire him. The very idea that a significant fraction of this country thinks he is anything but horrible as president is a testament to the frightening power of Fox News and Russian social media propaganda.

He hasn't.

I can't believe I watched the whole damned thing. The bottle of Cline Ancient Vines Zinfandel probably had something to do with that?

I agree with all the remarks about how a kindergarten teacher would have been a better moderator. Chris Wallace's dad, Mike Wallace, would have been a better moderator, too.

I don't know if I can watch any future Presidential debates. I just want the Orange Man out of the White House yesterday!!
