I'm looking forward to it. If we can read Trump's lips while his mike is muted, we may learn some dirty words we didn't know already.

Re: Presidential and Vice Presidential debates 2020

The first debate was a horror. The second was scrapped. Now it’s up to Kristen Welker.

By Jeremy Barr
Oct. 22, 2020

Kristen Welker was handed a daunting enough task when she was tapped to moderate Thursday night’s debate between President Trump and Joe Biden — the youngest by nearly a generation of the four journalists chosen by the Commission on Presidential Debates to oversee this election season’s series of nationally-broadcast candidate faceoffs.

Then the stakes were raised when her fellow moderators found themselves criticized for failing to maintain order, and the president’s positive coronavirus test prompted the cancellation of the second Trump-Biden matchup. Now, the NBC White House correspondent has the herculean challenge of refereeing the last significant media moment for the candidates before election day.

Not to mention the fact that one of the participants has been insulting her to whoever will listen. In recent days, Trump has called her a “no good," “crooked,” “terrible,” and “unfair” “disaster” who is a “radical left Democrat” and a “totally partisan" and “totally biased” “Never Trumper” (”That’s not true,” Welker’s colleague Kelly O’Donnell shouted back at Trump after he accused her of being a secret liberal on Monday.) Over the weekend, an article in the conservative New York Post, which was hyped on the Fox News morning show “Fox & Friends,” claimed that Welker has “has deep Democrat ties,” based largely on the fact that her parents have made campaign donations to Democratic candidates.

Libby Leist, who serves as executive producer of NBC’s “Today” show and is part of Welker’s debate prep team, says that her colleague is brushing off the criticism and staying focused on the task at hand. Like this year’s other moderators, Welker declined to grant pre-debate interviews.

Says NBC colleague Andrea Mitchell, who considers Welker a good friend: “I just think that she and all of us have to put blinders on and ignore all the noise, because it’s such a distraction. Obviously, I don’t want to see my friend criticized in any way, but she’s tough and she can take it. We’re all in the arena, and we’ve all faced a lot of criticism. And I think it’s inevitable and it comes with the territory. And I think she’s ready for it.”

The debate will undoubtedly be the biggest moment of Welker’s quickly moving career. At 44, she is 29 years younger than Chris Wallace, who moderated the massively unpleasant first debate between Trump and Biden, which was hijacked by interruptions and candidate rule-breaking. Susan Page, 69, moderated the one and only vice-presidential candidates debate between Mike Pence and Sen. Kamala Harris, which was widely considered to be a more substantive event — though she also received a heavy dose of criticism. Welker, however, will likely benefit from a change made by the debate commission for Thursday’s debate that will see each candidate’s microphone muted when the other is initially answering her questions, so as to minimize interruptions.

In addition to being the youngest debate moderator of the cycle, Welker is also the only moderator of color at a time when racial inequality and systemic racism are significant issues for voters. (Welker’s mother, Julie, is Black.) She has selected “Race in America” as one of the five topics she will ask about, along with covid-19, national security, climate change and the less tangible “leadership” and “American families."

Biden just HAS to keep talking, regardless of the Trump interruptions. Apparently Chris Christie and Rudy Giuliani, in prep for the first debate, told Trump to keep interrupting Biden, because it tends to make stuttering more prominent -- and then Trump can use that to "prove" that Biden is losing his mind....

Just keep talking and tune Trump out, Joe. We can hear you over Trump!

Trump is such a pig. He wants it all: Joe's speaking time as well as his speaking time. What will he do to try to get it?

I'm guessing he'll shout over Biden even when his own mic is cut off. Biden and the moderator will certainly be able to hear it, and enough of it will probably come through Biden's mic that we in TV Land will hear it, too.

I share your trepidation, and not sure if I will watch. If I do, I will be appropriately anesthetized.

Well, I'm disappointed in Kristin Welker so far. Trump is throwing out all kinds of ridiculous talking points, going WAY over his time -- including repeated rebuttals -- and every time Kristin Welker tries to ask a follow-up, Trump just keeps saying "Wait a minute. You need to hear this." And then Kristin Welker just keeps saying "Make it quick" -- and then Trump talks WELL over two minutes again and again.

Trump isn't interrupting -- but only because he doesn't have to. And here goes Trump going personal -- and when Biden tries to refute the ridiculous Trump claims, she just says, "Moving on...."

Wow, I thought Kristin Welker did a far better job than any previous moderator had done.

This wasn't as awful as I had been dreading, but Donald Trump is such an unpleasant, vile person that I just hate watching and/or listening to him.

Well, I will DEFINITELY agree with you that she did a FAR better job than the other moderators did. But Trump kept whining and whining for more time, and she kept giving him more and more time. The few times she put her foot down, he DID finally back off so she could ask a new question. I only wish she had done that more often.

Overall, Trump was his usual boorish self, and Joe did a good job of explaining his policies and correcting Trump's lies about him.

Trump's been whining over and over about needing Barr and the FBI to start an investigation into Biden. Is he really THAT tone deaf not to realize that more than 50 MILLION ballots have ALREADY been cast? If he was going to pull an October surprise, it's too late.

I thought Kristin Welker did a fine job. She was even handed in allowing both participants time to respond to the back and forth exchanges that came up over the course of the debate. I don’t know how much power the moderator, any moderator, has to control the candidates. She managed to minimized Trump’s diversionary efforts. And I think that Biden handed Trump his head as far as the debate on substance that Kristin Welker elicited with her questions.

I thought Biden left a bit on the table when Trump was railing that Biden did nothing during the Obama Administration and Biden didn’t point out the relentless obstructionism of the Republican Congress.

That's a great point, Brick. At the beginning of the Obama administration, Mitch McConnell said the priority of the Republican Senate was to make Obama a one-term president. And the Senate obstructed everything Obama tried to do.

Trump made a fool of himself by insisting that he had done more for black people than any president, with the possible exception of Abraham Lincoln. What can you do in the face of that remark except laugh?

I thought Kristen did as well as anyone could have done. Her obvious classiness and intelligence were in stark contrast to Trump's obvious boorishness and ignorance. The ladies at the MSNBC desk were full of praise for her in the commentary that followed the debate.

I'm seeing all kinds of accolades for Kristen Welker this morning, so maybe I judged her too harshly. I wrote that post mid-debate....

Brick and Belle, you're exactly right that Biden should have said that the Republican Senate had been blocking virtually everything Obama and Biden tried to do. He FINALLY said it right near the very end of the debate. It should have been a talking point that he KNEW to bring up.

I knew I'd have to be in a separate room from Brett to watch it. After the debate, I told him my thoughts about Biden's failure to use that answer, and Brett said, "I know. I could hear you yelling from your office."

Nicolle Wallace had the PERFECT statement today, in response to a clip with Trump talking about the immigrant children being "very well taken care of" in cages, sleeping on concrete with mylar blankets.

Nicolle said, "If that is what Trump thinks is being 'very well taken care of,' that gives us an image of what it's like to stay at one of his resorts."

Ka-CHING!!!
