Oh, you red-state people!

Yeah. People in Indianapolis stood in line as long as TEN HOURS yesterday. But, you know, there's "different folk" living down there....

The Town Clerk called late yesterday afternoon and said that the police will be reviewing the video recording from their front office from October 4th to see if they can figure out what happened to our ballots. If it wasn't so infuriating that the damn things somehow got lost, this could be the making for a fairly entertaining TV comedy/mystery.

The police are involved??? To me, that sounds like you weren't the only ones who made a complaint. Darn...

The police are involved because the drop off box I used was in the Police Station, under their 24/7 protection.

Whoa.... I just read your earlier post and had missed that. THAT would be brazen!

Two years ago, we had early voting at one of the government buildings in our city. More than two months after the election was over, the election office found 1,100 ballots that had been locked in a cabinet. The clerk apparently forgot about them. The election commission decided they SHOULD be counted. (Ya think?) The newly counted ballots didn't cause any changes in who won. But what a mess.

Is it possible that someone in the police station took the ballots out of the box for "safekeeping" somewhere?

The rep from the Police Dept says that they don't know what happened, but the "Great Investigation" continues!

In other news, Lauren and I filled out statements that we had no other ballots in the system (which is true at the moment) and we were given new ballots today. We filled them out at Town Hall and handed them off to the Town Clerk. They were time stamped and put in the vault.

2020 is a special year, ain't it?

(CNN) - 'It's extremely problematic': Republicans inject new chaos into 2020 election with unauthorized ballot dropboxes in California

The latest election controversy cropped up this week in California, where Republicans installed dozens of unauthorized ballot dropboxes that state officials say are illegal.

The dropbox debacle, triggered by California Republicans who appeared to violate state laws, immediately injected new chaos into the frenzied and unprecedented 2020 election process.

The coronavirus pandemic has led to historic interest in mail-in voting, but President Donald Trump and the GOP have spent months attacking the integrity of mail ballots and fighting in court against dropboxes. The California dispute is the latest flashpoint in this ongoing battle.

"Whether or not it is technically legal, it's extremely problematic for voters," said CNN election law analyst Rick Hasen, who is also a law professor at the University of California, Irvine. He said the unauthorized dropboxes were "not secure" and that the GOP was "asking for trouble."

California is mailing ballots to all registered voters this year. Voters can mail back their ballots or return them at official dropboxes. There are anti-fraud safeguards built into the process to make sure ballots are filled out by the right voter, and that dropboxes are protected from tampering.

The California Republican Party installed dozens of unauthorized ballot dropboxes in at least four Southern California counties, where there are competitive House races this year. The party claims it did this as part of an above-board effort to legally collect and return people's ballots.

Election officials in affected counties expressed alarm about the "deceptive" boxes. California's governor, attorney general and secretary of state -- all Democrats -- condemned the dropboxes and sent cease-and-desist letters, telling the state GOP to remove the dropboxes by Thursday. As of late Tuesday, no response had been received, according to Attorney General Xavier Becerra's press office.

Republicans claimed they merely wanted to use their makeshift dropboxes to collect people's ballots and return them to election officials. The dropboxes were spotted at churches and gun shops in more conservative-leaning areas, suggesting they were an effort to boost turnout among GOP voters where there are competitive House races.

"Republicans are in a tough spot," Hasen said. "On one hand, you have the President, who is criticizing vote-by-mail and says it is prone to fraud. On the other hand, Republicans in California has long relied on a strong vote-by-mail operation to get out the Republican vote."

But some Democrats claimed Republicans were trying to rig the election. California Gov. Gavin Newsom said the incident proved Republicans would "lie, cheat, and threaten our democracy all for the sake of gaining power," without providing evidence that the GOP planned to tamper with ballots. Republicans deny any wrongdoing and accused Democrats of hypocrisy.

Of course, they were just trying to help....

Wow.... Rachel Maddow just said that former attorneys from the Justice Department will back up currect Justice Department employees if Trump tries to make them do something illegal or if Trump tries to fire inspector generals and protected employees.

Former military lawyers (JAG?) have told those in the military that they are available for help if they are unsure about the legality of any military orders Trump would put in place.

I am SO glad to see people coming together from all over the place to protect our democracy.

'He’s getting a bit desperate': Trump tramples government boundaries as election nears.

As his fundraising has slipped, Trump has upped his use of federal resources to compensate.

quote:

The farther behind Donald Trump has fallen in the competition for campaign dollars, the more he’s milked government resources to make up the difference.

Millions of boxes of food doled out to needy families — with letters signed by the president taking credit stuffed inside. An $8 billion program for drug-discount cards to seniors featuring Trump branding — intended to arrive before the Nov. 3 election. A $300 million advertising blitz to "defeat despair" over the coronavirus pandemic — the biggest threat to Trump’s reelection.

Each of those initiatives have two things in common: They’re paid for with taxpayer money, and they are plainly intended to help Trump’s flagging reelection campaign. The actions are just the latest examples of how the president has eviscerated the traditional boundaries separating politics from government.

His heavy reliance on federal resources and his own executive powers to win reelection come as Trump has fallen more than $100 million behind Joe Biden in TV ad spending, and slipped to a double-digit deficit in national polls.

As the election approaches, Trump has moved beyond using his control over federal resources to deploying government officials to carry out his political messaging. Last week, Trump suggested that his attorney general prosecute some of his political enemies. Days ago, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo vowed he would release Hillary Clinton’s emails “before the election,” moving to resurrect a volatile issue from the 2016 race. And Attorney General William Barr has put the weight of the Justice Department behind Trump’s unfounded allegations of voter fraud.

“I do firmly believe that Trump has blended his personal business and the functioning of government in a way we’ve seen perhaps never in United States history.”

Nick Schwellenbach, senior investigator with the nonpartisan Project on Government Oversight.

“The president is increasingly using all the levers he’s got for political purposes,” says Donald Ayer, a former deputy attorney general under George H.W. Bush who has endorsed Biden. “You can wonder whether he’s getting a bit desperate … It appears to me that the president is making increasingly outrageous demands and comments as time goes along.”

Presidents of both parties have regularly used the power of incumbency to their advantage during election years. Jimmy Carter made political ads from the Oval Office. Ronald Reagan was seated behind the Resolute Desk when he announced he was running for reelection. Bill Clinton invited political supporters to spend the night at the White House. And George W. Bush delivered his Republican National Convention speech from the White House, saying his duties overseeing the response to a looming hurricane kept him in Washington.

But Trump has taken the use of the federal government for politics to another level. And the pace and intensity of his maneuvers have increased as his poll numbers have dropped and his campaign war chest has dwindled, according to government watchdog groups.

Read more here.

No surprise here. He has always blieved that he was above any laws because of being President Trump. I sincerely hope that when he leaves office, whenever, he will be on his way to prison.

Wow....

Rachel Maddow is showing 16 emails that were sent to her by viewers (and sent by the viewers to the FBI), obstensibly sent by the Proud Boys, but were actually sent by Iran and Russia:

From: Proud Boys (email address)
Date: October 20, 2020 at 3:06:48 EDT
To: [Redacted full name]
Subject: Vote for Trump or else!

[Redacted full name] we are in possession of all your information. You are currently registered as a Democrat and we know this because we have gained access into the entire voting infrastructure. You will vote for Trump on Election Day or we will come after you. Change your party affiliation to Republican to let us know you received our message and will comply. We will know which candidate you voted for. I would take this seriously if I were you. [Redacted complete street address] good luck.

Ahhhhhhhhh.... This is why the DNI and FBI held the press conference tonight, telling people about the intended intimidation emails....

(NBC News) - Supreme Court blocks curbside voting in Alabama despite Covid-19 fears of voting indoors

The Supreme Court late Wednesday blocked a lower court order allowing voters in Alabama to cast their ballots curbside at polling places that provide that option. Alabama's secretary of state has said that allowing curbside voting would "cause confusion and much harm" and pose safety concerns and that it could compromise ballot secrecy.

Voting rights advocates have backed curbside voting as a way for at-risk voters to stay safe during the pandemic and to make voting easier for the disabled.

Sure is....

Now there are more questions about the DNI/FBI announcement about Iranian and Russian intervention into the US election. Both Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnell had guests on, talking about the press conference.

Apparently the DNI (a Trump stooge) went first, going on and on about how these foreign efforts were designed to embarrass Trump. (HUH??? A personal threat telling people to vote for Trump is meant to INTERFERE with Trump votes???) Then FBI Director Wray followed him with a general announcement that the FBI will continue to investigate any threats to voting -- but didn't follow the DNI's lead of the claim that it hurts Trump.

Geez, the DNI needs to try to elicit sympathy FOR Trump with this crap???

I watched the press briefing when it happened. My take was that the DNI was trying to plant the seed that bad acts were chiefly being done by Iran -- oh, yeah, and maybe a little bit Russia, too -- and that's where we should look to focus our unhappiness with foreign interference.
