Election live updates: Louisiana becomes first state to postpone primaries amid coronavirus fears

By John Wagner and Colby Itkowitz
March 13, 2020 at 12:44 p.m. PDT

Louisiana became the first state to postpone its presidential primaries amid the coronavirus outbreak. The state, which was supposed to have its primaries on April 4, will instead hold them in June, Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin said Friday. State officials made the decision amid concern about older poll workers getting exposed to the novel coronavirus.

The extraordinary announcement came as the Democratic contest between former vice president Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) entered a new stage in response to the pandemic, as Biden planned to hold his first “virtual town hall” Friday afternoon. In an earlier speech, Sanders argued that the coronavirus outbreak has exposed the weaknesses of the U.S. health-care system and advocated an embrace of his Medicare-for-all proposal.

Both Biden and Sanders are preparing for a one-on-one debate Sunday in Washington without a live audience. They will go before the voters again Saturday in the Northern Mariana Islands and Tuesday in Arizona, Florida, Illinois and Ohio — contests in which Biden hopes to add to his delegate lead and put the race out of reach for Sanders.

Question: Trump has declared a national emergency. Would that give him the power to delay the presidential election in November?

Another question: How many governors could practice tomfoolery with their primaries, to save their own hide and/or the hides of persons downballot whom they want to support?

From what I have read, Robbie, the President does not have the power to suspend any election. But that doesn’t mean that this one would not try to do it. I’m sure he believes he’d get away with it if he were to try. Article Two gives him the power to do whatever he wants.

Further poking around the interwebs reassures me that, while the Constitution doesn't mandate a particular election date, Congress did in the form of mandating the date for choosing electors. That date is the November election date.

Whew.

Trump has had a history of pushing the envelope, but it usually has been in the context of what would “play in Peoria,” ie, with the public, such as, not letting people from certain (Muslim) countries fly in, and the whole business with the immigrants from the south. It always seemed to be policies that would appeal to the racism in some of his followers. The only reason he hasn’t been more successful is because those mean old courts sometimes got in the way.

Would an attempt by him to suspend the November election fly? I’m not so sure.

Good point, Birdz. That one may be a step too far.

(CNN) - Georgia postpones presidential primary due to coronavirus

Georgia elections officials will postpone the March 24 presidential primary to May 19 because of the coronavirus, becoming the second state in the nation to delay a vote in the race for the White House due to the pandemic, according to Walter Jones, a spokesman with the Secretary of State's office.

Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said in a statement Saturday that coronavirus has increased the risks to voters and poll workers with in-person voting. "Governor (Brian) Kemp has declared a public health emergency. President (Donald) Trump has declared a national emergency," Raffensperger said. "Events are moving rapidly and my highest priority is protecting the health of our poll workers, their families, and the community at large."

Raffensperger said all votes already cast in person and all absentee ballots will be counted. He also said every eligible voter who has not yet had a chance to cast a ballot in the March 24 elections will be able to do so on May 19, along with the elections already scheduled for that date.

A Georgia government official told CNN that they began getting calls from poll workers, some of whom are elderly, concerned about their health on Election Day.

"It's almost literally a life and death decision for these poll workers. And if we use rookies to do the job, the election could be a mess," the official said.

The same government official noted that Louisiana's decision to become the first state to postpone its presidential primary next month was not the tipping point, but made it easier to make this call.

Call me a cynic, but could it be that REPUBLICAN governors postponing primaries might at least partly be driven by a hope that Biden momentum will be broken enough to prevent Democrats from achieving closure and starting their unification against Trump?

In 2016, my state of Washington had a caucus to allocate delegates. This time around, we had a true primary with MAIL-IN ballots. Bingo! No problems, no bias against working families, no virus worries, no intimidation at the polls. Why doesn’t EVERY state do this for a simple, efficient, fair election?

(NBC News) - Ohio primary thrust into chaos after judge rejects request to delay Tuesday's contest

A judge declined a request from Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine to postpone the state's Tuesday primary until early June as the coronavirus outbreak worsens. Ohio's primary is set to take place Tuesday alongside contests in Illinois, Arizona and Florida. It's unclear if the ruling can be appealed and if voting will take go forward as planned.

(NBC News) - Ohio governor defies judge's decision, says polls will remain closed amid coronavirus 'emergency'

Ohio's primary election was thrust into chaos on Monday night as Gov. Mike DeWine said the state would not open polls on Tuesday because of the coronavirus outbreak after a judge declined to postpone the contest until June. "To conduct an election tomorrow would force poll workers and voters to place themselves at an unacceptable health risk of contracting coronavirus," DeWine said in a statement posted to Twitter. DeWine said that Ohio's Health Department director would declare a health emergency to keep polls closed and Ohio's secretary of state would seek a remedy through the courts to extend voting options.

What is it with Republican elected officials that they seem to think the courts can be ignored?

I'm guessing Bernie will withdraw by week's end. He has no path to winning the nomination now.

Indiana has joined the crowd.

Our May 5 primary has been moved back four weeks to June 2.

Edit: Crowd, not crows.
