Thanks, Chuck. That's practical and helpful.

If each adult uses one gallon of water a day, a two-week supply would be 14 gallons per person.

How much is "a flat or two" of bottled water? I have six gallons on hand at all times, but I realize how little that is. I think the guideline is one gallon per day for each person. Some must be allocated for pets, as well.

1 flat = 24 bottles @ 16.9 oz = a little more than three gallons.

A two week supply for two people would be nine flats according to the normal gallon/day/person guidelines. The guidelines for emergency situations is half that, however, just 2 qts/person/day.

As Lis points out, normal tap water delivery is unlikely to be compromised. All of this is just a feel-good measure, admittedly.

I'm going by DHS guidelines, and they recommend a supply of water. I don't know why, and questioning their wisdom is probably not totally out of bounds.

I'm the furthest thing from a prepper and never stock up for potential emergencies, but like Birdz says, the way this has played out in China has got me a little spooked. A flat or two of bottled water and some cans of soup seem like cheap insurance.

When I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, we always kept a supply of drinking water in case of an earthquake that cut off the water supply. I'm not sure how this virus could affect water supplies, but I agree having some on hand seems like a reasonable suggestion.

I think I'll follow your advice and get some canned foods and other non-perishable foods and store them in the part of my basement that is unfinished.

I always have a few gallons of drinkable water on hand, too. Right now I have eight gallons. I just went out to the garage to check their expiration date. It was January 20, 2020.

Oh.

It’s probably still good, Robbie. As long as the water supply doesn’t get contaminated, you may not need to use it, but it’s good to have the bottled stuff just in case.

I’m going to get a few cases of canned food such as beef stew and ravioli, in case of a mandatory quarantine like we’ve seen in China. I’m concerned about keeping a supply of prescription medications to last throughout a quarantine.

Most insurance won't cover prescriptions till you're almost out and due for a refill. I don't know how you stockpile without self-paying, which is not affordable for most people. But I think the Trump/Pence cabal will see this as the opportunity of a lifetime to get rid of the poor and minorities. This whole virus thing is like a giant wedding gift to Stephen Miller.

I hadn't thought about prescriptions until you mentioned them here. I refill my trays on the weekends, so I'll soon see what I need to refill. I also hate that the pharmacy refuses to provide 90-day prescriptions, so I have to go parading in twice a month (because, of course, they were prescribed at different times) to pick them up....

Brett's heading to Costco in Indy tonight, so I had him pick up a case of Spaghettios, a case of ravioli, and a case of peanut butter crackers. We have a pretty full freezer, so I think we could go for quite some time.

Oh, guess who is REALLY suffering from this crisis.

Corona beer.

My heart goes out to them.

Remember back in the 1970s, when they heavily advertised those little green candies called "Aids"?

Didn't hear much from them in the 80s, did you?

One other thing.... I've been thinking hard about what we do if other residents or staff at Mom's nursing home come down with it. Do we get her out of there before she can catch it? Or would she already be contagious before we even realize she's sick, and then bring her home to the rest of our family?

Argh.

Egads, Lis, I hadn't even thought about that possibility.

I have no idea what you should do in that circumstance.

Rachel Maddow reporting.... Oregon health officials have announced their first case of coronavirus. No connection to the others, and no idea of where the patient got it.

Regarding the first patient in Northern California, the National Nurses United says, "The single COVID-19 patient admitted to the facility on Feb, 18 has now led to the self-quarantine at home of at least 36 RNs and 88 other health care workers. The 124 nurses and health care workers, who are needed now more than ever, have instead been sidelined. Lack of preparedness will create an unsustainable national health care staffing crisis. Nurses view the handling of this COVID-19 case as a system failure and not a success."

I am almost certain that the nursing home would insist that she is safer there than anywhere else -- skilled nurses to care for her. But...do you dare take the chance?

As opposed to taking the chance of bringing her into contact with all of you?

Yeah, that's the hard question.

Rachel Maddow just reported that the Oregon case involves a worker at Forest Hills Elementary School in the Lake Oswego School District in Oregon. The district is closing the school through March 4.

And so it begins....

And then...this just came out:

(NBC News) - BREAKING: Trump calls coronavirus Democrats' 'new hoax'

President Donald Trump accused Democrats of "politicizing" the deadly coronavirus during a campaign rally in North Charleston, South Carolina, on Friday, claiming that the outbreak is "their new hoax" as he continued to downplay the risk in the U.S. Trump said that criticizing the White House's response to the coronavirus outbreak has become the Democratic Party's "single talking point."

You know.... If the Trumpies are so sure Trump is right about this, THEY should be the medical staff who work in the rooms with these "fake" patients. C'mon.

Snohomish County is close to Robbie and me.

Live updates: New coronavirus cases of unknown origin indicate virus is spreading in U.S.

By Gerry Shih, Derek Hawkins and James McAuley
Feb. 29, 2020

Health officials in Washington, Oregon and California on Friday reported new cases of coronavirus among people who have not traveled recently to countries hit hard by the outbreak or come into contact with anyone known to have the disease.

The Washington State Department of Health announced late Friday that a high school student in Snohomish County, just north of Seattle, tested positive for the deadly virus and was in home isolation. The student had not recently traveled to areas where the disease had spread, indicating it may be a case of community transmission.

Washington health officials also said a woman in her 50s in King County tested positive after traveling to Daegu, South Korea, the site of a major coronavirus outbreak. She, too, is in home isolation. Both cases in Washington were “presumptive positives,” officials said, meaning they were awaiting confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Earlier Friday, Oregon health officials reported a presumptive positive test in a resident in Washington County with no known travel history or contact with infected individuals. California also reported a second case of community transmission, in Santa Clara County, after reporting the nation’s first such case, in Solano County, earlier in the week.

The four new cases Friday bring the total number of covid-19 cases detected through the U.S. public health system to 19, according to the CDC.
