I am just sickened at how the Response to the pandemic has been politicized So cynically here. Because we have a president who is broadcasting the message that it’s ok to gather in huge crowds, without masks, the pandemic here is likely to last even longer than it would if people did the right thing and observe social distancing with masks.

But since trump’s worshipers won’t do that, those of us who are voluntarily staying in house arrest, partly for our own protection and partly out of a sense of social responsibility, are going to find our confinement prolonged even further.

Re: Coronavirus

And now, Trump's addition to the Coronavirus Task Force, Dr Scott Atlas, is advocating for herd immunity.

Herd immunity is what we get when a large percentage of the population is immunized against a disease so that those few who cannot be immunized, for one reason or another, aren't exposed to the disease by the rest of us -- the herd.

But Dr Atlas is advocating for us to get to herd immunity without vaccines -- just by having much/most of us get the virus and those who survive it will then be immune. Those who understand pandemics say that would require several million of Americans to die.

Trump is buying Dr Atlas's suggestions and pooh-poohs the need to wear masks or practice social distancing.

Dr Atlas's medical specialty is neuroradiology, not infectious diseases.

Who is most likely to listen to Trump's guy? Trump's supporters, of course. So why does Trump want to kill off his supporters?

We liberals are going to continue to mask up and keep a social distance from others.

Thank you for expressing my rage about this much better than I could, Birdz.

Worse yet, Rachel Maddow said tonight that he hadn't even PRACTICED medicine for more than a decade.

Can you IMAGINE the advancements that have been made in infectious diseases in the last decade???

(CNN) - White House chief of staff: 'We are not going to control the pandemic'

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said Sunday that the US is "not going to control" the coronavirus pandemic, as cases surge across the country and nearly 225,000 Americans have died from the virus.

"We are not going to control the pandemic. We are going to control the fact that we get vaccines, therapeutics and other mitigation areas," Meadows told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union."

The comments from President Donald Trump's chief of staff come as coronavirus cases surge across the US and the administration continues to consistently disregard advice from government health experts to wear masks, social distance and avoid large gatherings as a way to curb the spread of the virus. The White House is also facing a potential second outbreak of the virus after at least five people in Pence's inner circle have tested positive in recent days, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Pressed by Tapper on why the US isn't going to get the pandemic under control, Meadows said: "Because it is a contagious virus just like the flu." He added that the Trump administration is "making efforts to contain it."

No, they are NOT making efforts to contain it. Therefore, no, this administration will NOT control the pandemic.

(CNN) - Some doctors fighting the pandemic now have another thing to worry about

For months Dr. Jinendra Satiya has faced fears on the front lines of a deadly pandemic, treating coronavirus patients. But now the doctor, on a fellowship at a Boston hospital, is facing a new anxiety: that new immigration restrictions could make it harder for him to stay in the country.

Satiya is one of thousands of foreign doctors who came to the United States on a visa that recently landed in the Trump administration's crosshairs. A proposed rule could make it more difficult to renew J-1 exchange visitor visas, which allow scholars, doctors and others to live temporarily in the US while they study or receive training.

On the surface, it may sound like a small bureaucratic move. But Satiya and organizations representing doctors across the country warn it could affect medical care for Americans at a time when the country needs resources to fight the coronavirus pandemic....

Satiya is one of about 12,000 doctors who are foreign nationals in the United States on a J-1 visa, according to the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Visitors on J-1 visas are admitted to the US for the length of their training program -- for doctors, it's typically a one-year contract at a hospital, renewed annually for the duration of their residency.

When physicians on J-1 visas complete their competency reviews and get their contracts extended for another year, they then apply for visa renewal through the ECFMG.

But under the proposed rule, the annual visa renewal would require an additional step -- applying through US Customs and Immigration Services. That processing time could take 5 to 19 months, according to the USCIS website, and interrupt doctors' ability to continue working at their hospitals.

Just great. Because, you know, those foreigners are just taking jobs that Americans want anyway, right??? /snark

(CNN) - At least 5 people in Pence's orbit, including chief of staff Marc Short, are positive for coronavirus

At least five people in Vice President Mike Pence's orbit have tested positive for coronavirus in recent days, including chief of staff Marc Short and outside adviser Marty Obst, a source familiar with the situation told CNN.

There are concerns that more people within Pence's inner circle will test positive in the coming days, the source said. "They're scared," the source said of staffers in the vice president's office.

Vice President Mike Pence and second lady Karen Pence each tested negative for coronavirus on Sunday, a White House official said. Despite contact with multiple people who recently tested positive, Mike Pence is refusing to quarantine in defiance of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

Of course Pence won't quarantine. He's got his eyes on the prize (2024), and he needs to get his face in front of the people (free advertising at taxpayers' expense) as much as he can.

This is why people like us, who are “voluntarily” in confinement, are going to see that confinement prolonged for who knows how long. The selfish assholes who aren’t taking measures to prevent the spread of the disease see nothing wrong with their behavior, because they have trump and pence as role models.

This is starting to affect my mood. I could put up with it, but after seven months of this !@#$, it’s gotten beyond old. I’m fed up.

I'm curious about what Republican nominees will be like after Trump. Would Pence be in the running? Can milk toast follow red meat?

I understand, Birdz.... It is SO infuriating.... I'm in the middle of both worlds at this point. The things I NEED to do, I go out for -- always masked and generally gloved, and then I slather up WELL when I get home, before I touch anything in the house. I'm passing on all of the FUN things -- and that's just not fair.

This morning, I woke up with a sore throat and a cough, and I could feel a fever raging, as I went from cold sweats to overheating. I was so upset with myself and tried to figure out where I might have caught it and whether I should just go directly to the emergency room....

And then I REALLY woke up -- and realized that it had all been a dream. So this stuff has even entered my dreams. Lovely.

Birdz, we are birds of a feather. (Pun intended I guess.) I believe you and I have been on stricter quarantine than others on this board. Isolation has made me start to feel feral. I wish death on these politicians. I am so lonely, depressed and bored. I can't do anything I enjoy, or even see a tree or any part of nature. My next door neighbor, who I have only met for about 15 minutes over the past year, asked to get together for a glass of wine. She is a young college student. I don't know how we can do it and be covid safe. I've been unable to see family and friends, let alone make new friends. Some days I just never get out of bed. The Republicans make clear people like us are expendable.

Well.... It has happened. BOTH of our local hospitals have FILLED our ICUs with COVID patients. No more room for ANYONE in the ICUs.

Our school board met for a work session, and the Superintendent and School Board President changed the calendar yet again. We had already set the Wednesday before Thanksgiving as an e-learning day. We have now added Monday and Tuesday, so the e-learning constitutes a day at school, and the custodians have a full week to do deep cleaning before the final push to Christmas -- I think that means three more full weeks of school, and then three weeks off for Christmas....

School districts around Indiana are doing all KINDS of different things. Some are completely virtual. Some are completely in person. Some are a hybrid.

We are in a bizarre situation because the Superintendent, in conjunction with the School Board President, has the authority to change everyone over to virtual at any time the Governor moves state to yellow, orange, or red status. Day after day after day, we're seeing new records for diagnoses, hospitalizations, and deaths, but our Governor is blazing ahead at Stage 5.... Huh??? PURELY political. He was doing SUCH a good job until he got serious about his reelection next week....

There are now over 4000 new infections diagnosed per day in Florida. Weeks ago DeSantis opened up the state saying that cases have been trending down since July. It was false then, but now it is obviously untrue and I hear nothing from this governor about adjusting to the new realty of another surge.
