Years (decades?) of human rights advances are being wiped out by this Administration ...

Trump administration reverses Obama-era prison rules to protect transgender inmates
Biological sex only will determine where such prisoners are housed

The Trump administration is reversing Barack Obama-era measures aimed at protecting transgender jail inmates, after four women prisoners challenged the policies in court.

The Bureau of Prisons has rolled back rules that allowed transgender inmates to use facilities that match their gender identity, including cell blocks and bathrooms.

Now, an inmate’s biological sex will be used to determine where such prisoners are housed, instead of ...

Delaware poised to ban ‘conversion therapy’

The Delaware House last week voted 24-14 to approve a ban on “conversion therapy,” a widely discredited practice that purports to change sexual orientation from gay to straight.

Senate Bill 65, which prohibits the use of “conversion therapy” on LGBTQ youth in Delaware is sponsored by State Sen. Harris McDowell and State Rep. Debra Heffernan (D-Bellefonte). The measure was approved by the Senate last year and is expected to be signed into law by Gov. John Carney.

Delaware would join 12 other jurisdictions that ban the practice, including New Jersey, Nevada, California, Connecticut, Vermont, Illinois, Oregon, Hawaii, Maryland, Rhode Island, New York and the District of Columbia. New Hampshire is in a similar situation as Delaware, with its General Assembly passing legislation preventing the use of “conversion therapy” awaiting signature from its governor.

The Human Rights Campaign said in a statement that research has shown “conversion therapy” can result in numerous harmful risks, including decreased self-esteem, depression, substance abuse, homelessness and suicidal behavior. The practice has been condemned by the American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association and American Medical Association.

“For young people across Delaware, this legislation provides vital and potentially lifesaving protections from the damaging, dangerous and discredited practice known as ‘conversion therapy,’” said HRC National Press Secretary, Sarah McBride, in a statement. “While Delaware has made historic progress on LGBTQ equality, we can and must do more to protect LGBTQ youth from rejection, stigma and harm. SB 65 is a critical and significant step in the right direction.”

McBride is a native Delawarean, born in Wilmington. She worked as a campaign staffer for Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden’s 2010 campaign and Gov. Jack Markell’s 2008 campaign.

“We thank those members of the General Assembly who voted to protect LGBTQ children against the dangerous and harmful practice of conversion therapy, and especially prime sponsors Sen. Harris McDowell and Rep. Debra Heffernan and their legislative aides for their leadership,” said Equality Delaware’s Mark Purpura in a statement. “We look forward to Gov. Carney signing the bill into law promptly.”

Under the measure, a licensed medical practitioner who performs the practice could be fined or have their license revoked.

Absolutely.

Mike Pence, however, will be devastated -- and finding new judges willing to overturn such laws.

From Canada

Federal Court judge approves historic gay purge settlement

A federal judge has approved a landmark deal to compensate members of the military and other agencies who were investigated and sometimes fired because of their sexual orientation.

Cheers of joy and celebratory hugs greeted the decision of Federal Court Justice Martine St-Louis after hours of testimony today from class action members.

Gay military veterans told St-Louis they were interrogated, harassed and spied on because of their sexuality.

Sobbing could be heard from onlookers as a steady stream of men and women took turns at a microphone to lament how being gay or lesbian made them enemies of their own country.

An agreement in principle in the court action was drafted last November, just days before the government delivered a sweeping apology for decades of discrimination against members of the LGBTQ community.

The final settlement includes at least $50 million and up to $110 million in total compensation, with eligible individuals each expected to receive between $5,000 and $175,000.

Re: Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

In Ohio ...

Republican bill would force teachers to ‘report’ boys to their parents if they aren’t manly enough

Nick Duffy

A Republican-backed bill in Ohio would force teachers to out children to their parents if they do not conform to the “manner” of their “biological sex”.

The bill, submitted by Republicans Thomas Brinkman and Paul Zeltwanger, would force schools, doctors, and care providers to immediately notify the parents of any pupil who acts “in a manner opposite of the child’s biological sex.”

It states: “If a government agent or entity has knowledge that a child under its care or supervision has exhibited symptoms of gender dysphoria or otherwise demonstrates a desire to be treated in a manner opposite of the child’s biological sex, the government agent or entity with knowledge of that circumstance shall immediately notify, in writing, each of the child’s parents and the child’s guardian or custodian.

“The notice shall describe the total circumstances with reasonable specificity.”

Although apparently targeted at transgender youth, the provision on “manner” is so loosely worded that campaigners have warned it could even be deployed against boys who don’t want to play football.

The same bill, HB658, also bans schools from referring to pupils who are transgender or gender non-conforming by their chosen pronouns and name – unless approved by parents.

The bill would give parents an unlimited right to block any transgender-related treatment for their children.

It states: “The parents, guardian, or custodian of a child shall not be subject to adverse action as a result of the refusal to permit gender dysphoria treatment, or refusal to provide written, informed consent for such treatment, for the child.”

The bill makes clear that parents “may withhold consent for gender dysphoria treatment or activities that are designed and intended to form a child’s conceptions of sex and gender.”

The ban on “gender dysphoria treatment” would force all state agencies to withhold “educational materials, classes, or programs” as well as “Medical, psychological, social, or other professional
treatment, therapy, counseling, or other services” from children whose transition does not have their parents’ approval.

It adds: “It is the policy of this state that the parents, guardian, or custodian of a child retain the right to determine what is in the best interest of the child regarding the following:

(1) The child is diagnosed with gender dysphoria.
(2) The child exhibits symptoms of gender dysphoria.
(3) Whether the child should participate in classes or programs, with or without accompanying educational materials, classes, or programs related to sex and gender
troduced
(4) Any counseling, therapy, or treatment provided to the child regarding the child’s gender dysphoria.”

Unsurprisingly, the bill has been criticised by LGBT rights groups, who say it would directly enable abuse against LGBT kids and unleash a wave of negative consequences.

Equality Ohio said: “Ohio’s HB658 is the latest attempt by anti-LGBTQ extremists in Ohio to codify explicit second-class citizenship for LGBTQ people, only this time, they are targeting transgender youth.

“We already have a legal standard of how we treat kids in Ohio – we treat them in accordance with their best interest. Period.

“The state policing of behaviour opens a can of worms. Who is the judge of which gender is allowed to do what? If Jane signs up for shop class, will her parents receive a government letter? If Jordan doesn’t want to play football, do his parents get a letter? What if Alex wants to attend a meeting of the student LGBTQ group – does the school email that to Alex’s parents?

“Just what stereotypes are they expected to enforce?

“In targeting transgender children, the bill authors create a ridiculous and unenforceable requirements – requirements that out transgender students and create a significant threat of bullying and reduced access to social support systems.”

The group adds: “This bill is anti-trans youth. It’s attacking our most vulnerable.

“A few cynical politicians are trying to drum up fear and division about transgender youth and their families at a time when we need more love, respect, and kindness.

“This unnecessary and discriminatory bill does nothing to support youth and families.

“In fact, it puts the livelihoods of some of our most vulnerable youth – transgender youth – further at risk with bullying and discrimination by potentially forcing teachers to out them.”

Another federal court rules in favor of trans students in religious right lawsuit
By Ron Johnson

Bathroom bigotry against transgender students has been dealt another legal blow.

A federal appeals court in the Third Circuit has ruled in support of a southeastern Pennsylvania school district that protects the rights of transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms consistent with their gender identity.

The ruling continues a string of court victories supporting transgender students.

The appeals court agreed with a lower court ruling in favor of the Boyertown School District and its transgender students. The ruling said the school-district policy “fosters an environment of inclusivity, acceptance and tolerance.”

To do otherwise, the appeals court said, would “very publicity brand all transgender students with a scarlet ‘T.’”

The group Alliance Defending Freedom had argued that transgender students were threatening the privacy of other students. But the appeals court took less than an hour to rule otherwise.

As have other decisions in favor of transgender students, the court applied federal Title IX to prohibit discrimination against transgender students.

Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, hailed the ruling.

“Policies that exclude transgender students alienate some of our most vulnerable children and set a terrible model for their peers,” Keisling said in a statement.

“Anything short of giving transgender children the same rights as all students is not only illegal but immoral.”

Long article with lots of embedded tweets ...

Her tweet echoed Sarah Huckabee Sanders, but her story ended very differently

They both got kicked out of different Washington, D.C. area restaurants on Friday. But only one suffered unjust treatment.

While White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders used her government Twitter account on Saturday to criticize a private business that politely asked her to leave, Charlotte Clymer shared a story of her own. Both women were ejected from a restaurant on Friday, but the similarities end there.

"Last night, I was told by the manager of @CubaLibreDC that I couldn't use the women's restroom, and after challenging his discrimination with D.C. law and responding to his threat of calling the police w/ "please do so", I was forcibly removed from the restaurant."

Clymer, who happens to be a press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, wrote those words at the start of a sprawling Twitter thread that has since gone viral. In the thread, Clymer describes the series of events that led to her being thrown out of the D.C. restaurant.

Replying to @cmclymer
I was there w/ a large group of girlfriends. We're having a bachelorette weekend for my good friend @emilycrockett, and first on our list was a dance party being held at @CubaLibreDC. Everyone had a great time. Lots of dancing and drinking and hanging out with great people.

@cmclymer

Near the end our time there, I went to use the restroom with my friend and before I reached the door, an attendant stuck out his arm and said he needed to see my ID. When I asked why, he said that "female" must be on an ID to use the women's restroom. No one else was asked.

Clymer ignored the attendant's request and made use of the restaurant's facilities. She actually heard him enter the women's restroom at one point, apparently searching for her. He was "doing everything but opening the stall doors" and eventually left.

When Clymer finished up and went to rejoin her friends, she was confronted at the restroom door by both the attendant and the restaurant's manager. The latter claimed D.C. law stated that a person "must have 'female' on your ID to use the women's restroom." Clymer told him he was wrong and again refused the request.

The exchange continued, with the manager insisting he was correct even after Clymer called up the text of D.C.'s restroom laws on her phone. At one point, the manager threatened to call the cops. But when Clymer encouraged him to do it, he simply told her to leave.

Shortly after, a bouncer escorted her out. Just another night in Donald Trump's America. But this is where the story turns in a more positive direction.

This is hardly the first time we've seen that sort of thing happen.

There's a vid on Youtube of a cisgender teenage girl being thrown out of a MacDonalds because a police officer wouldn't believe she was a girl when she went to use the washroom and she didn't have any ID with her. Seems short hair, jeans, and a baseball cap meant she had to be a boy.

What the....???? POTTY POLICE???

Good for her for putting the name of the club out there. Hopefully a whole lot of potential customers will now know one place to avoid. Sometimes economic consequences are the only messages places like these understand....

From an octogenarian MTF friend's Facebook page

7 things to expect when you first come out as trans
Those who matter won't mind, that those who mind won't matter.

Coming out is hard. It can be difficult to explain how you feel and who you are, especially if you're still trying to figure all of that out yourself. There's a whirlwind, rollercoaster of a journey laid out before you.

But it's okay. No, really, it is. It's the start of you being you. Win or lose, at least you'll know where you stand and who you can count on.

Glamour Boutique, who specialise in clothing for trans people and are a staunch advocate for trans issues, explains what to expect when you come out as transgender.

1. You'll ask yourself "why?" a lot – and come out to yourself first
"Why am I like this?" has probably spun around in your head a few times. It's no good beating yourself up – you are the way you are, and it's not going to change.

You might even question why you have to tell anyone when you can just stay the course. But that'll just keep you asking yourself "Why?" The first person you'll come out to is yourself – that's when you'll find out why.

2. You'll feel ...

Huh??? I thought they had lifted that ban YEARS ago!!! Good heavens, people, wake up!!!

Not to mention that hetero transmissions of HIV are the greater issue now. What are they going to do, ban everyone who has had sex?

Ivanka Trump donated $50K to a vicious anti-LGBTQ hate church in Texas
Alex Bollinger

Ivanka Trump, Donald Trump’s daughter, donated $50,000 to a church in Texas that has a history of anti-LGBTQ activism.

Last week, CBN News reported that an anonymous source said that Trump gave $50,000 to the Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano after she read a tweet that said that the church wanted to help immigrant children.

Now Graham has confirmed that the donation was made. “I’ve had the opportunity to meet with Ivanka Trump a number of times over the last year, and I’ve been struck by her kindness and concern for those in need,” Graham said.

While the church is possibly doing commendable work for immigrant children, it also has a history of anti-LGBTQ activism. The church’s website calls being LGBTQ “Sexual Identity Confusion.”

The site also says that “sexual identity” – which includes both gender identity and sexual orientation – is “fixed in us at our creation” and is not an “individual choice.” While it notes that not all LGBTQ people are in “rebellion against God’s design,” it says that homophobia and transphobia “are motivated by truth and love, not ignorance or hate.”

While not laying out a specific form of conversion therapy, the church advocates finding “sexual wholeness,” which it uses as a euphemism for being straight and cisgender.

In 2015, Prestonwood helped lead the fight to repeal the Equal Rights Ordinance in Plano, which added sexual orientation and gender identity to the city’s anti-discrimination policy. The city’s council voted 5-3 in favor of the ordinance, and a coalition of conservative Christian churches tried to get it repealed through a ballot measure.

“The pulpits must be aflame with God’s truth and righteousness in calling openly and strongly for every voter to be faithful to this basic duty of stewardship,” said one of the group’s email blasts.

In reaction to the 2015 Obergefell decision that required all states to recognize marriage equality, the church’s pastor Jack Graham wrote an angry column.

“This past week, the family once again came under attack in America,” he wrote. “This is an old fight dating back to the Garden of Eden when Satan seduced the first family with lies and deception. The same lies are in play today.”

“The biblical design of marriage is clear: a man and a woman living and loving together in a monogamous relationship in the image of God. Today, same-sex marriage is at the forefront of the fight for the biblical family. Gay marriage violates God’s standard and is outside God’s plan for men and women.”

He also tweets:
