I thought it was something other than water [sign in to see URL] brain doesn't function at [sign in to see URL] am glad for Belle to have the softener. I'm lucky in that I live on to of one of the best water aquafers in N. America.

Glad to hear that all is well with the Qs!

Somebody took my newspaper. When I got up early to use the bathroom I looked outside to see what the night hath wroth. My paper was in the driveway. When Shadow and myself had napped some more, I got up and fed her then went out to get the paper. Gone. Since the back door was unlocked I thought that maybe DD had gotten up and gone out for some reason, but it's nowhere that I can find. Maybe the door didn't get locked but I'd have sworn that it did.

Well, I'll bet that I know what happened. Turns out the paper was on a stool next to some spray stuff for my gardens that were in red bottles and the bag for the paper was orange. It was also out of my way. When my young neighbour got his retriever, when he was outside he liked to retrieve my newspapers. Destroyed a couple so he would pick them up and put them in my mailbox. The dog has been leaving them alone but may have gotten this one before they went duck hunting. He's a great kid with a good family.

Good morning, all. All continues to be quiet in the bricklayer sphere. Sandy and I have finally kicked the nasty bug we had and the weather has been very pleasant and mild.

We’re on the edge of another colder front and it is expected to dip into the 20s and 30s for a few days. Because of the colder temps, we bit the bullet and had a new A/C/heat pump installed next door. Because we upgraded an antiquated straight cool system(45 years old) we qualify for a $350 rebate from the power company. That was good news. And lower electric bills will also be welcome.

I’ll have a coffee to go, Tanya, please. I’m going up to the coffee shop for a light breakfast. If none of the boys show up it will be a quick turnaround. I’m bringing a book just in case I decide to stretch it out a bit.

I hope everyone’s discomfort has eased some this morning.

Bonjour!

Coffee, Tanya.

It's 19 with pretty slight snow flurries. Some as stuck to the street, although there really is little accumulation.

To be honest, I'm miserable. I didn't sleep much last night, have napped some in the recliner but this cold weather just hurts my legs. I've had some cereal and am on my first cup of coffee. Shadow has her [sign in to see URL] napped with [sign in to see URL] I've got the fireplace on. Hopefully that will warm things up a little here in the great room and I'll feel better.

Good morning, all. We have 38 degrees with a decreasing chance of rain, heading for a forecast high of 49. Perfectly fine for January in the Northwest.

Brick, I'm glad to see you and Sandy are finally kicking that bug. You've endured it for weeks!

But Cooter, I'm so sorry you're miserable. I hope some heat will help.

It looks like a football day around here.

Coffee, please, Tanya.

49 degrees and very light rain. No wind. Not nearly as messy as it was yesterday. It's not light out yet, but light enough to drive in (I don't drive at night), so I'll seize this opportunity to go to the store before the Saturday shopping crowd gets going.

Re: The Rumpus Room

Good morning all. It is a beautiful day here on the Driftless Area. Granted it was 8 below zero when i got up at 7:30 this morning. But not a cloud in the sky. And only a relatively light breeze. Of course tomorrow is supposed to be colder with the damned blowing snow that is seemingly ever present around here. Oh well we just need to make the best of the day we have.

Dont breath a word of this to the crazy blond headed Czech lady But i am about to head into town without either the walker or the cane. I have been really working at it around the house. And if i am very deliberate in every step i take, i can maintain my balance. When i get to town i need to make a stop at the bakery ffor bread and pasteries. And the chance to flirt with the two little Mennonite ladies who own the bakery. They think i nay but nuts but that i am harmless. Little do they know. Wink, wink.

Then iwill do the weekly grocery shopping. Stop by the butcher shop for some meat. Then drive about five miles out into the country to the Dairy for some milk, cheese, and whipping cream. Of course i will suffer the indignity of having one of the bag boys taking my groceries to the car fo me Likewise, at the butcher shop and dairy. But vat least i will be walking unaided. And maybe at least i can get my bag of baked goods to the car by myself. Although knowing my lady friends. They will still regard me as handicapped and will insist on carrying my pastries to the truck for me. Which brings up another topic. I just threw my handicapped placard in the circular file. I will leave the handicapped spaces for those who really do need them.

So a cup of black coffee to go, please. I need to get going. Havve a great day everyone. And stay warm!

Brick, I am so glad you and Sandy are feeling better! Enjoy your lower electric bills! Hope you found some company for breakfast coffee.... emoticon

Sorry you had a rough night, Cooter, but glad to hear the later part of the day is better. The shrimp sound delicious!

I'm so glad your weather has improved, Belle and Robbie! Much nicer for the walks with Kudo. emoticon We got all the way up to 20 today and have already fallen to 14 (wind chill 2 above), going down to 4 above tonight.

GoHawk.... I sure admire your determination, but must play Mother Hen to ask you to be careful.... Far better to arrive in Trieste on a cane than on crutches! Careful....

I spent today cleaning the house. We finally had all of the air ducts cleaned Wednesday, and while the guy had a vacuum to suck out the particles behind the brush that was doing the cleaning, there was still dust and grit everywhere. Ugh. So.... I emailed a woman in our neighborhood who, with her daughter, cleans houses. She's coming over Monday to give me an estimate. We got a cleaner after I broke my shoulder, and he was fabulous! But he got an offer to teach and couldn't turn it down. For the last year and a half I've really given it my best try. The boys would do the vacuuming and clean the showers and do other things I just can't reach. But now they're gone, so.... I'm giving in. It will be well worth it. I just hate giving in. Darn pride. emoticon

Ah Lis. You mention pride yet two breaths before you caution Hawk about the very same thing LOL. Yes I think we are all quite sensibly (well we would be) doing a delicate balancing act/ballet twixt ego and reality. In my opinion this is how it should be.
A proper gloomy day here today which meant it was an effort to get out there and walk. We did though and soon enjoyed our walk round the 'country park' created out of the spoil heaps of a former deep coal mine. As a one time long time ago ex collier who must have contributed to such excrescences I glory in the re greening of the raped land.
Images,
A surprisingly biting wind in exposed corners of a sheltered site.
Stacks of kids wobbling still on Christmas bikes. The sheer determination/concentration they bring to their task is awesome.
Is the number of dogs you own a status symbol? We ended up with two by accident and it was not a good idea. We met people today with bunches of the things.
I am still in awe of the forces that can create a park with a pond with wildlife, Trees and meadows in a place where as a young teen I felt threatened by the spoil heaps and industrial infrastructure as I cycled to see my kin.

I had hunting dogs when I was growing up but that was about the only reason. I've always had cats and like them much better. I'd have a dog now if I had room for one but I'm very happy with Shadow.

Tomorrow I've got to fold some laundry and repair the kitchen faucet this old body permitting. There's cheeseburgers and fries for lunch and peel 'ems and eat 'ems for supper along with a few beers that I've hoarded. [sign in to see URL] FOOTBALL!!

Re: The Rumpus Room

Well, good morning once again my friends. It is now 9 degrees below zero (minus 23C for Joe’s benefit) and snowing. Well so much for the theory that it is too cold to snow when the temp drops below zero.

Joe and Lis, i will confess to being both prideful and a wee b it vain. And it is that combination of pride and vanity that does influence my walking unaided not only coming off that aitplane at the Trieste airport, but also in my daily life in Fayette and Winneshiek counties, iowa.

In actuality, my pride comes in conflict with the the fact i am just simply growing old. It hurts my pride that at age 67 i can no longer run the 800 metres in 1:51.7 as i did as a 20 year old university track and field athlete (Hell, i would be lucky to come within one minute of 1:51), And sadly i can no longer claim to be a better than average Alpine skier (Thanks to a boyhood growing up in the shadow of the Julian Alps). But at least i should be able to negotiate the Bunny Slope. But old age and these GD lesions on my spine have relegated me to sitting in front
of the lodge fireplace with all the other old folks.

Loss of our powers is not like any other loss. I sympathize and empathize with you all. When I look at the things I can't do, I remember the things I used to be able to do and feel the loss. The comebacks and partial comebacks are a thrill, though. I remember being able to see again after having cataracts removed. It's easy to believe in miracles when you've been through that. I remember being in my bed in rehab after a hip replacement, watching people walking around without a walker, and wondering how they DO that. When I started walking around again, it was like being reborn. Now every time I succeed in doing something that looks impossible, I feel triumphant. Is that what is meant by second childhood?

Good morning, all. It is an invigorating 35 degrees here this morning. It should be pushing 40 by 9 which is when we’ll take to the trail. Shiva and I had a brief romp at first light but she looks quite comfortable stretched out on the love seat.

I think I’ll chase my oatmeal with a Sumatra Aceh this morning. I feel like a good jolt is in order.

GO STEELERS!!!

GO SAINTS!!!

Good luck with the game, Cooter. Hope you’re feeling better.

Coffee, Tanya.

It's 22 and sunny here at the North Mississippi Pole. It will get above freezing today. I finally added a light blanket on top of my comforter last night and slept nicely thereafter. I don't know why I didn't do it before.

I look at it this way, Hawk. I no longer can take care of my yard myself because of age and infirmity. Same for some of my household chores. I'm in pain at some level 24 hours a day and forget things. Still, at age 73 I'm better off than others I know who are younger. My heart is healthy and I've been able to adapt my life to what I can do. This place and the folks who inhabit here are part of my life, and I'm thankful for all of you. I find it somewhat interesting although it pisses me off that I had to give up the guitar a few years ago but can still use a keyboard with just some discomfort in my thumbs at times. I'm very thankful that y'all allow me to come in here and !@#$.

I'm looking forward to today with cheeseburgers, fries, shrimps, and pulling for the Steelers and the Saints!
