Re: Coronavirus

WTF is Gov. DeSantis smoking? He wants Florida schools open, but they’ve had new cases exceeding 10,000/day within the past week, and several hospital ICU units are at capacity.

DH just commented that this is a “plague.” He’s right.

Unbelievable. When I left for my meeting this afternoon, Mike Pence was on with some kind of press briefing, saying that it would be just FINE for the public schools to all open up again, because a child catching or transmitting the virus is VERY rare....

(NBC News) - As coronavirus surges, more Houston residents are dying suddenly at home

As COVID-19 cases surge, a rapidly growing number of Houston area residents are dying at home. The previously unreported increase is the latest indicator of a mounting crisis in a region beset by one of the nation’s worst coronavirus outbreaks. “We never thought it was COVID,” said Karen Salazar, whose 54-year-old mother died suddenly last month after collapsing at home in Houston. “We didn’t even realize she had it.”

In a live interview tonight on MSNBC, some official (Mayor?) in the Houston area said that in a number of cases, when people first got sick, they didn't feel up to waiting eight hours in their cars to get tested. And when their conditions worsened, they didn't want to go to the hospital because they're hearing that all of the hospitals are full and they'll be left in hallways....

As a kid, I survived getting all the childhood diseases for which there are now vaccines. How did I catch them? Most likely at school! And the trumpists want to drag the kids back to school during a raging pandemic? Good grief.

Houston convention center operator cancels in-person Texas GOP meeting

The Republican Party of Texas' in-person convention was scheduled to happen in Houston next week. Chair James Dickey has said party leaders have worked on a contingency plan to host the convention online.

July 8, 2020

The Republican Party of Texas' in-person convention next week has been canceled, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said Wednesday.

The news came after Turner directed the city's legal department to work with the Houston First Corp., which operates the George R. Brown Convention Center, to review the contract with the state party.

Turner said officials with Houston First sent a letter this afternoon to the State Republican Executive Committee, the state party's governing board, canceling the gathering, which was set to happen July 16-18 and was expected to draw roughly 6,000 attendees.

"These are some very serious times," Turner said at a news conference. "Simply, the public health concerns outweighed anything else."

(NBC News) - WHO expands coronavirus guidance after pressure from scientists over airborne spread

The World Health Organization expanded its coronavirus guidance on Thursday to include the possibility in certain circumstances of airborne transmission, in which the virus could be spread through tiny droplets that linger in the air. The update came after more than 200 scientists signed an open letter pressing the agency this week to acknowledge the risk of airborne transmission among people in crowded, indoor settings for prolonged periods of time. With reported outbreaks in some closed settings, such as restaurants, nightclubs and places of worship, WHO responded that more research is "urgently needed to investigate such instances and assess their significance for transmission of COVID-19."

I remember this being a controversy months ago. I wonder if there's just more evidence now, or if the virus has mutated. Heaven knows we don't need politics involved with the WHO. Let the scientists and researchers speak!

(NBC News) - Judge blocks first federal execution in 17 years over coronavirus threat to victims' families

A federal judge in Indiana late Friday issued an order blocking the United States government’s plan to resume federal executions on Monday. The judge acted at the request of family members of the victims who said their health would be endangered by having to travel during the pandemic. They asked that the execution be delayed until it is safe to travel.

I don't support the death penalty, so there is good in delay. But over fear of the victims' families getting sick while viewing? That just seems like a VERY thin reason....

(NBC News) - Inundated Houston hospitals issue grim advisory to ambulances: Go elsewhere

Houston hospitals have been forced to treat hundreds of COVID-19 patients in their emergency rooms — sometimes for several hours or multiple days — as they scramble to open additional intensive care beds, according to internal numbers shared with NBC News and ProPublica. "All the hospitals are full," said Dr. Jamie McCarthy, an executive vice president at Memorial Hermann Health System. "We are adding more capacity, but we are absolutely stretched now, and if it keeps going this way, we’re going to run out of room."

This is bad.... Indiana finally turned red on the map of states seeing increases. We were doing so well, especially for a red state. And our governor has been phenomenal. We were supposed to open to Phase 5 on the 4th of July, but Eric Holcomb looked at the data and said no -- we're holding. I can't imagine reopening the schools while it's like this -- and the first students go back in our district in 18 days.

Which link, Lis? Do you mean from my last post? My screen doesn't show a link on that post. It only shows the picture.

Yes, from your last post. It only shows the word "Image" with a little broken screen. I quoted your post to find the tiny URL you were using, but when I put that into my browser, it gave me the "bad link" symbol.

When I quote your original post, Belle, this is the link I see: https://tinyurl.com/yb2lgf96

But if I try to put that in my browser, I get exactly the error message Robbie got.

I'm wondering about that "https". Heaven knows I don't know computers, but I know that "s" on the end is for "secure." Is the link from a site that you have to log onto?

That's what I wonder, too, Lis. Is this from a site that has a membership and won't show its stuff to non-members?

It could be. I think that's why the quiz website Belle used to put here doesn't work for the rest of us anymore.

This is very strange. I'm unaware of having a membership on that website. I clicked on the link an e-mail correspondent gave me, and found it and copied it, then posted it here. I'm sorry it's not coming up for you.

It has two groups of thumbnail pictures. In the top group are pictures of the leaders of the countries most affected by the coronavirus: US, Brazil, Russia, Spain UK, Italy, and France. All men.

The bottom group pictures of the leaders of countries that have managed the crisis best: Germany, Taiwan, New Zealand, Iceland, Finland, Norway, and Denmark. All women.
