I agree, Robbie. People naturally pick up card after card before finding the right one -- potentially coughing or sneezing or talking while standing there. And that doesn't even touch how terribly expensive greeting cards have become!

I've gotten to the point that I just use Publisher to make my own cards. Heck of a lot cheaper, and I can personalize them.

Re: Schools and Education

(Washington Post) - California State University, nation’s largest 4-year system, to teach remotely in fall

California State University, the largest four-year public university system in the country, announced Tuesday it intends to go without in-person instruction for most classes in the fall term, a major signal that the coronavirus pandemic will keep some college campuses largely empty for months to come.

The plans will mean a continuation of remote teaching at all 23 campuses in the Cal State system, affecting most of its 482,000 students. Exceptions could be made for laboratory-intensive courses and certain others, officials said.

Cal State’s decision contrasts with a growing movement elsewhere in the country to reopen university campuses in the fall — or at least, announce the intention to do so.

Like most colleges and universities, Cal State shifted rapidly to online instruction in March as the coronavirus spread through the United States. The health crisis has created enormous complications for schools with a mission focused on gathering people together in classrooms, residences, dining halls and other campus venues.

In recent weeks, officials at many other major public universities have proclaimed their plans to welcome students back to campus in the fall, albeit with restrictions. Some schools have been circumspect, saying they plan to make a decision in the next several weeks. Few have openly declared that they will be running mostly online.

I read elsewhere online that USC is already facing numerous lawsuits demanding a return of at least some of their spring tuition and fees.

If they were offered the full courses online, they have consumed their tuition costs. I don't think they can get that back. But unused room and board? That should be retured. Other fees (technology, support of student organizations, parking) should have to be considered on a case-by-case basis (of the fee, not the student).

What is Publisher, Lis?

For a long time now, I have bought cards that are blank inside, and written limericks or poems to print out on my printer and paste inside the card. But I've never done my own cover page.

How nice, Belle?

I think Publisher is part of the Office Suite. You just pick your pictures and write your text into a template, and then it prints on the paper, such that you just fold in half, and then fold in half again, you'll get a very nice ready-to-go card. emoticon

(NBC News) - Trump says schools should 'absolutely' reopen in the fall, knocks Fauci for his caution in Senate testimony

President Donald Trump criticized his top coronavirus adviser publicly on Wednesday, saying Dr. Anthony Fauci's Senate testimony on schools was "not an acceptable answer."

"He wants to play all sides of the equation," Trump said of Fauci during a meeting Wednesday with the governors of North Dakota and Colorado at the White House.

No, Fauci presented accurate information, saying that the decisions would have to be made locally.

Graduate Together: America Honors the High School Class of 2020

Good on those involved with producing and performing on the May 15 one-hour TV special to take the place of the graduation ceremonies that the high school class of 2020 should have had.

President Barack Obama gave a ten-minute commencement address that recognized what has been taken from this class by COVID-19 but gave a hopeful and uplifting speech to them.

Well done!

WaPo and the New York Times both have videos and transcripts of Obama's two speeches.

I agree completely, Robbie. How refreshing it was to hear someone speak calmly, articulately, and compassionately, a rare event in today's discourse.

Obama also used nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in all the right places! Wow!

Re: Schools and Education

We had our monthly School Board work session today. The Wednesday before our next Monday official board meeting, we meet for two hours to go over the agenda, the items we'll be voting on at the next meeting, and any other issues (budget, curriculum, etc) that is the focus of that meeting. We generally meet from 1:00 to 3:00. Today, we didn't get out until 4:30 -- and I think we could have easily spent ANOTHER 3 1/2 hours getting into the minutia.

Today's topic? Reopening.

My heavens.... You wouldn't BELIEVE everything that has to be considered. From busing to food service to cleaning to technology to special ed to PE to clubs to choir to sports SAT and state testing to facility use requests to nurses' responsibilities to hiring more school counselors to deal with the kids' increased anxiety, to figuring out how "art on a cart" teachers will teach art without having any of the children share materials....

It doesn't help that all KINDS of federal and state government entities are sending directives -- many of which contradict each other -- on a daily basis.

The Superintendent says he is nearly done with his plan for the district -- which is currently at 60 pages. Then the principals will send out plans specific to their buildings. And no doubt, teachers will send out plans specific to their classrooms.

I'm absolutely exhausted after listening to everything they're having to do. Getting back to school is going to take a village -- and there is no guarantee that once they're back, if there's a spike, they won't be pulled right back out of school again....

Lis, I can think of plenty of things that have to be considered and I'm sure you can think of lots more of them.

And I have no confidence that on-site education is going to work for a while.

As each of the cabinet members explained his/her area of expertise and what would be required, it just sounded more and more grim.... Not to mention that because the state has cut our spending so badly that we now RELY on grants to meet our costs -- and we now cannot meet some of the conditions of many of those grants....

And we have maybe 30-40 international students who come in and pay tuition, room and board, to participate in our exchange program. Trump's new "keep all those foreigners out" policy has killed that program for at least this year....

I just don't have much confidence, either, Robbie. It's surely not for lack of trying. But the majority of idiots around this town absolutely refuse to mask up, and their kids surely learn from that. emoticon

(NBC News) - New York City public schools will reopen on a part-time basis in the fall

New York City public school students will return, on a part-time basis, to classrooms this fall with in-person instruction two or three days a week, officials said Wednesday. The coronavirus pandemic forced the system of 1.1 million students to close in March. Mayor Bill de Blasio said schools will be back with safety precautions.

(NBC News) - Harvard, MIT sue Trump administration over rule that strips visas from international students if coursework is entirely online

Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday against the Trump administration over guidelines that would strip international students of their visas if their coursework was entirely online. The lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement seeks an immediate restraint against the new policy, which was announced Monday, along with a declaration that it is unlawful.

I have responded to his Tweets concerning schools. I have not called him names but I have pointed out who is responsible for schools and who is charged with making sure that they function properly and for the care of the students. He is none of those.

I've also pointed out that it's not Biden or the Democrats attempting to use our schools for personal political purposes.

You're exactly right, Cooter.

Trump's extreme narcissism causes him to think that EVERYTHING is connected to him. School starting, wearing masks....

Donnie, it's just not about you. At all.
