Mary Kay Letourneau, teacher who raped and married student, dies at 58

By Staff and News Services
July 8, 2020 at 8:01 a.m. PDT

Mary Kay Letourneau, a teacher who married her former sixth-grade student after she was convicted of raping him — a case that drew international headlines — has died at 58.

Her lawyer David Gehrke said the cause was cancer, but he did not disclose further details.

Ms. Letourneau, the daughter of a fiery conservative congressman, was a married mother of four in 1996 when she taught 12-year-old Vili Fualaau in her class at Shorewood Elementary in Burien, a Seattle suburb.

Police discovered them at about 1:20 a.m. on June 19, 1996, parked in a minivan at the Des Moines Marina.

Ms. Letourneau, then 34, initially told officers the boy was 18, raising suspicions that something sexual was going on. At the police station, they claimed Ms. Letourneau had been babysitting the boy and took him from her home after she and her husband had a fight.

About two months later, the evidence was undeniable: Ms. Letourneau was pregnant. They had a daughter — and then, later, another one, conceived in 1998, after Ms. Letourneau had pleaded guilty to child rape but before she began serving a 7 ½ -year prison term. (Her defense attorney said she had been diagnosed with a form of bipolar disorder.)

Ms. Letourneau and Fualaau married on May 20, 2005, in Woodinville, Wash., after her release.

Fualaau and Ms. Letourneau characterized their relationship as one of love at that point, even writing a book together — “Un Seul Crime, L’Amour,” or “Only One Crime, Love.” Their story became the subject of a USA Network movie, “All American Girl.”

King County court records show Fualaau asked for a legal separation from Ms. Letourneau on May 9, 2017.

Fualaau’s mother filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit claiming the city and school district failed to protect her son from the teacher. But the defendants said the relationship was so bizarre that no one could have predicted it.

The district’s lawyer said it began off school grounds, after the academic year had ended. Police argued they simply had no evidence of sexual abuse until it was too late. A jury found against the family.

San Francisco lawmaker proposes CAREN Act to make false, racist 911 calls illegal

The Caution Against Racially Exploitative Non-Emergencies Act is a play on "Karens," white women who target people of color for engaging in everyday acts.

July 8, 2020, 2:13 PM PDT
By Isoke Samuel

A San Francisco lawmaker proposed a bill this week that would make fake and racially motivated 911 calls illegal.

Shamann Walton, a member of the city's board of supervisors, proposed the Caution Against Racially Exploitative Non-Emergencies Act, known as the CAREN Act, at a board meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

The acronym for the bill is a reference to “Karens,” the term used on social media for white women who target Black people or people of color for engaging in everyday acts. Recent examples include the white woman who called police after being asked by a Black man to leash her dog in New York's Central Park, and the white couple who confronted a Filipino American man for writing Black Lives Matter in chalk outside of his house in San Francisco.

“The CAREN Act will make it unlawful for an individual to contact law enforcement solely to discriminate on the basis of a person’s race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity,” Walton said in a statement.

The bill would work alongside a proposal by California state Assemblyman Rob Bonta to make discriminatory 911 calls a hate crime.

"If you are afraid of a Black family barbecuing in the community park, a man dancing and doing his normal exercise routine in the bike lane, or someone who asks you to comply with dog leash laws in a park, and your immediate response is to call the police, the real problem is with your own personal prejudice,” Bonta said in the statement.

Current California law considers false police reports misdemeanor or felony offenses. But that does not include those who make calls like those described in the CAREN Act.

As for the name of the bill, some Twitter users, including actress Yvette Nicole Brown, have expressed amusement.

Others, like former San Francisco mayoral candidate Richie Greenberg, slammed the name.

“As if #SanFrancisco isn’t the butt of so many jokes and the poster child for Mismanagement corruption and homelessness, now we’ve got the ridiculously-named CAREN act, Oy Gevalt,” he wrote.

According to the press lease, under Bonta's Assembly Bill 1550, these 911 calls would be classified as a hate crime. The caller could also be sued for up to $10,000 in damages. Those who violate the CAREN Act would be liable for no less than $1,000.

After a 30-day hold, the CAREN Act will be heard at the Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee. If San Francisco Mayor London Breed signs the bill into law, it will take another 30 days to go into effect.

Trump attacks Lindsey Graham after SCOTUS rulings

“No Republican Senate Judiciary response," the president tweeted.

By ANDREW DESIDERIO 07/09/2020 11:48 AM EDT

President Donald Trump took a swing at Sen. Lindsey Graham on Thursday in the aftermath of two Supreme Court decisions involving his closely held financial records, lamenting that the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman and close Trump ally was not doing enough to target the president’s political foes.

Trump’s tweets came after a Supreme Court decision upheld a Manhattan grand jury subpoena seeking his tax returns and other financial documents as part of a criminal investigation into the practices of the Trump Organization. In response, Trump complained that former President Barack Obama was not receiving enough scrutiny over his administration’s decision to open up a counterintelligence investigation into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and the Russian government in 2016.

“We have a totally corrupt previous Administration, including a President and Vice President who spied on my campaign, AND GOT CAUGHT...and nothing happens to them. This crime was taking place even before my election, everyone knows it, and yet all are frozen stiff with fear,” Trump wrote on Twitter. He specifically called out Graham’s committee, writing: “No Republican Senate Judiciary response.”

The president’s claim doesn’t take into account the fact that Graham (R-S.C.) is running a wide-ranging investigation into the origins of the Russia investigation and was granted broad subpoena power to compel testimony from several former senior Obama administration officials.

Graham did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump’s jab.

Earlier this year, Trump pushed Graham to issue a subpoena to Obama himself, demanding that he be put under oath. But Graham has swiftly rejected those calls, arguing it would set a dangerous precedent. Trump has continued to push for such an action.

While Thursday’s Supreme Court rulings handed Trump a loss in the Manhattan case, the justices punted on a separate case involving congressional subpoenas for similar financial records, all but ensuring that the documents will not reach Congress or the public until after Election Day.

Trump says doctors were ‘very surprised’ by his ‘unbelievable’ results on a cognitive test

By Meagan Flynn
July 10, 2020 at 3:36 a.m. PDT

President Trump said Thursday night on Fox News that doctors who administered him a recent cognitive test were “very surprised” that he “aced” it, continuing a long-standing preoccupation with defending his mental acumen as critics constantly question his fitness for office.

In a live phone interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Trump bragged about his test score on a cognitive exam at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center after Hannity invoked presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden, asking the president whether he believed Biden had the “mental alertness” to be president.

Trump said he didn’t think the Democrat could pass the cognitive exam like he did.

“I actually took one very recently when, you know, the radical left was saying, ‘Is he all there? Is he all there?’ I proved I was all there, because I aced it,” Trump told Hannity. “I aced the test. … He should take the same exact test, a very standard test. I took it at Walter Reed Medical Center in front of doctors and they were very surprised. They said, ‘That’s an unbelievable thing. Rarely does anyone do what you just did.’ ”

It’s unclear exactly to what cognitive test Trump was referring in the interview. The most recent publicly disclosed cognitive test Trump took at Walter Reed was in January 2018, when the White House’s top physician said he got a perfect score. The exam Trump took then was the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, which is designed to detect mild cognitive issues, largely in older people. The 10-minute exam asks patients to identify animals in pictures, draw a clock, and perform basic word-recall exercises.

Several years ago my city's senior center offered cognitive tests to try to find cases of cognitive decline. I signed up.

One of the first questions had to do with an apple on a table. I focused on that. Later I was asked about it again. Yes, the apple was on the table. And, evidently, I had passed.

Evidently Trump's test looked more like the Graduate Record Exam and he aced it, too. Good on ya, gurl.

Because of COURSE it wouldn't be TRUMP'S fault that these investigations are going on at all. I am just amazed that these people just keep taking it. I suppose Graham has cast his lot with Trump, and even a strong challenge for his Senate seat isn't going to sway Graham. I hope, hope, hope his constituents will send a STRONG message to Graham....

How convenient for Trump that the doctors cannot refute his ridiculous claims because of HIPAA. Several talking heads last night were laughing at Trump's bragging. They said you would EXPECT most people to be able to pass that test with flying colors. The only thing the doctors might be amazed at is that it shows there is no cognitive reason for the things Trump does -- he's doing disgusting and horrifying things with full knowledge of what he's doing.

New York Times: Trump considered selling Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria, former acting Homeland Security chief says

By Devan Cole, CNN
Updated 11:37 AM ET, Sun July 12, 2020

Washington (CNN) -- President Donald Trump considered the idea of selling Puerto Rico in 2017 after the island was devastated by Hurricane Maria, the former acting Homeland Security secretary told The New York Times in an interview published Friday.

"The President's initial ideas were more of as a businessman, you know," Elaine Duke, who was serving as DHS' acting secretary when the hurricane hit the island in September 2017, told the Times.

"'Can we outsource the electricity? Can we can we sell the island? You know, or divest of that asset?'" Trump reportedly said, according to Duke in the newspaper interview. "(She said the idea of selling Puerto Rico was never seriously considered or discussed after Mr. Trump raised it.)," the paper reported.

Trump has had a fraught history with the US territory since Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Maria. Nearly 3,000 people died as a result of the storm and aftereffects, including widespread power outages.

Trump has previously taken aim at Puerto Rican officials for their management of the billions in relief funds his administration has appropriated for storm recovery, accusing the island's leaders of spending some of that money for reasons other than hurricane clean-up. In November 2018, White House officials told congressional leaders and appropriators that the President did not want any additional relief funding sent to the island.

Trump has consistently denied any fault for his administration in the aftermath of the storm. The President has instead sought praise for his handling of Hurricane Maria, calling it "an incredible, unsung success" last year.

History is going to have so much fun with this administration.

A parallel to the Trump administration was the administration of W. Lee ("Pappy") O'Daniel, who was governor of Texas from 1939 to 1949 and then senator from Texas from 1941 to 1949. He got his start as a radio personality instead of a TV personality. His business was flour instead of real estate. He was a huge embarrassment to the state. Here are Wiki's opening paragraphs about him:

Wilbert Lee "Pappy" O'Daniel (March 11, 1890 – May 11, 1969) was an American Democratic Party politician from Texas, who came to prominence by hosting a popular radio program. Known for his populist appeal and support of Texas's business community, O'Daniel served as the 34th Governor of Texas (1939–1941) and later its junior United States Senator (1941–1949). Excluding the 1960 race for the Democratic presidential nomination in which Johnson contested none of the primaries, O'Daniel was the only person ever to have defeated Lyndon B. Johnson in an election. O'Daniel was also a songwriter who composed "Beautiful Texas".[1]

The 2000 Coen Brothers film O Brother, Where Art Thou? featured a character played by Charles Durning and named Governor Pappy O'Daniel, loosely based on the real O'Daniel, and set in Mississippi.[2][3]

Donald Trump Jr’s new anti-Biden book misplaces apostrophe in title

Liberal Privilege, which he is self-publishing in August, is subtitled ‘Joe Biden and the Democrat’s Defense of the Indefensible’

Alison Flood | Mon 13 Jul 2020 08.08 EDT Last modified on Mon 13 Jul 2020 08.10 EDT

Donald Trump Jr appears to have forgotten one of the cardinal rules of the apostrophe: it comes after the “s” when the possessive noun is plural.

The American president’s son’s forthcoming book, Liberal Privilege, is subtitled “Joe Biden and the Democrat’s Defense of the Indefensible”. Unless Trump Jr is referring to only one Democrat, then the apostrophe needs to shift one place to the right to make the title grammatically correct.

*quickly passing Miss Grundy smelling salts*

Trump's desire to sell Puerto Rico after the hurricane is EXACTLY the reason that electing a businessman "to run government like a business" is a complete fraud. Government is NOT a business; it's a non-profit organization. (In fact, it has been a losing entity for some time.) You just don't get rid of things that don't make a profit. These are real people with real rights and real needs.
