Re: The Rumpus Room

Such a very sad day with the demise of Notre Dame....

Storm chasing doesn't really have a "charm" for me, Belle. I realized in the night that I was using the wrong term. "Weather spotter" is what I meant. The group of people who are activated when severe weather is expected. They are assigned to sectors of the county, and their job is to watch the skies to provide warnings to the community, and emergency services then pass that information on to the National Weather Service. I am fascinated by tornadoes, probably because I had a way-too-close encounter with one as a child. But I wouldn't go chasing them around for fun. I have a heck of a lot of respect for those who do the chasing -- as safely as possble -- for science and to increase warning times for people in the path of storms.

I hope your patch has arrived, Cooter.

Re: The Rumpus Room

Good afternoon, folks. I just got back from turning in my rental and complained about the tire (which needed even more air this morning), and requested a discount. I was offered about a 5% discount, which I took.

DH just gave me the 2019 auto issue of Consumer Reports, for me to start researching. Top criteria are reliability and safety, with seat comfort and gas mileage a factor as well. Come to think of it, I won’t buy a gas guzzler with uncomfortable seats. I also don’t want a black or white car, or a black interior. I’m not interested in fancy schmantzy entertainment systems or a built in GPS. Give me a USB cable plug so I can plug in my iPhone and I’m good to go on those counts.

Good luck finding a car without all that fancy stuff, Birdz. Most of it is standard, now.

That’s what worries me, Robbie. Some entertainment systems are so ridiculous, unless you have a bunch of kids who need to be entertained on long trips. As a driver, I don’t need potential distractions, not that I have a problem with that. My dad trained me well when he taught me how to drive, and drummed into me the importance of concentrating on the driving and keeping my eyes on the road, no matter what.

As I figured, I got mauled on taxes, even with close to double the medical deductions from the previous year. I figured they would go up because I had to raid my IRA some, but not this much.

Geez, I'm sorry, Cooter. Andrew got badly slammed, too, though Cameron came out okay. Brett and I came out about even, though we didn't have enough to itemize; the standard deduction came out better.

I certainly didn’t benefit from the new tax law either. I can’t say more without running foul of the PFZ rule, so I’ll leave it at that.

Re: The Rumpus Room

Good morning all. More insomnia. Up literally the entire night. Watching the news broadcasts from Paris. SO sad!

When i wasn't watching the news broadcasts (and refreshing my middle school level French). I was playing in an online Cribbage tournament. Amazing the entertainment outlets we discover when we can’t sleep.

I did rake a cup of tea and went out to the veranda to watch the sunrise. My favorite time of the day.

Currently 8*C (48*F), crystal clear skies and a light breeze out of the NE. Working toward an afternoon high of 17*C (64*F). Then it is forecast to warm slightly during the remainder of the week.

Today is uneventful other than a physical therapy session this afternoon. Then tonight I have agreed to swap with my brother in law. So i will be working at the trattoria from 6:00 p.m. until closing.

Tomorrow in my class i begin a section on the physical geography of the local area, and how that has impacted the culture of the area. On the edge of Trieste on the Karst upland is Grotta Gigante — one of the largest caves in the world. The entirety of St Peter’s Basilica could fit inside of the main cavern. For the most part, my students are from Trieste or other parts of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Yet the majority have never visited the Grotta. Therefore Friday we are taking a guided tour of the entire cave system. Paying particular attention to the instruments being used to measure the impact of the moon’s gravitational pull on land forms as well as on the oceans.

Have a great day my friends.

P.S. dont get me started on the issue of taxes either American or Italian. Definitely not my favorite topic.

47 degrees. White clouds like paving stones in the northwest dark sky this morning. Stars in other parts, but not very bright. Bright moon in the west.

No sleep last night. After a while I got up for 40 minutes, checked e-mail and newspapers and cyberspace boards, and went back to bed. Still no sleep. But to my great surprise, I'm efficient this morning, as if I had slept very well. I don't know whether I was thinking about Bernie on Fox or Notre Dame burning. Maybe I was trying to puzzle out the mystery of the book I'm reading. In any case, I'm up until I collapse.

Coffee, Tanya.

It's 50 and clear and should hit the upper 70s today. No rain in the forecast although we may get some boomers in a couple of days.

Hawk, I knew what cave you were talking about. I assume that I've read something about it somewhere and a bit of it hung around. Shadow is waking me up around dark thirty, and I wish she would quit or take longer. Then I know my back is hurting and I wind up getting up.

I haven't had oatmeal in a while, so I think I'll fix some this AM along with a piece of toast.

Got a two-hour nap, with dreams, so I should feel like lopping once the sun comes up, if it's not raining.

Good morning, all you sleepless people. I'm so sorry that so many of you can't lure Mr Sandman to your sides.

We have broken clouds and 42F and the forecast says we'll have increasing clouds throughout the day with the high topping out at 56F.

Hawk, I wish I could take your class. What interesting things you bring to your students!

Coffee, please, Tanya.

Re: The Rumpus Room

Greetings, everyone. So far, April has been a very busy month at the Queue household, so I apologize for not checking in here. First week of April was mostly work assignments and taking Mr. Queue to various doctor and physical therapy appointments. He is doing better now, to the point of actually driving himself to PT today!

Last week, we had a visit from nephew Major Andy and his family, who drove out here from Virginia in a large RV loaded with some belongings they stashed in our basement to store for several years while they move to Hawaii at the end of the summer. Major Andy has been reassigned from the Pentagon, much to his delight. Of course, my brother and SIL (Andy's parents) decided to join us for most of the visit, so I had a very, very full house with lots of laughter and fun.

And then Sunday was the start of Holy Week, with Palm Sunday. The rest of this week will be jam-packed with church services, for which I will be playing flute and singing in the choir. I really do like these services, but it can be tiring at times.

I hope all of you with health issues can get some relief. This growing older business is not for sissies!

And welcome to badhorsie! Always nice to have a new person in the group.

I'll try not to be such a stranger once I get through Easter...

Good news on Mr Queue, Susie!

After going through the Consumer Reports car guide, I’m still leaning towards getting a Prius. Next step is to touch base with some people who own one.

And I got another suggestion for Mom: Visiting Angels, maybe a monthly visit.

No nap. Just haven't been very spiffy.

The Wine Bar is open on my tab. I have a glass of a nice Chardonnay which should help me.

Ramundo, fix Lis a Lisberry margarita and a hot pretzel with extra salt.

Set some of our finest bourbon up for Ms. Que.
