Re: Media

The right wing abhors any entity that deals in actual facts and labels them as a leftist organization. They especially detest Snopes and Politifact.

Serious question.

Are those on the right THAT desperate to be right that they'll ignore plainly provable facts?

Or do they TRULY believe they're on a lonely island surrounded by liberal heathens who are out to destroy their way of life?

Or both?

Maybe both. Part of the problem is that we can't even agree on what constitutes a fact.

And those who get all or most of their news from FOX simply aren't informed on a whole lot of events.

And that's just what is SO darned frustrating and sad about all of this. We don't have a common starting point.

We could agree that the unemployment rate was 8.5% We could agree that that number was too high. We could agree that the government should do something to bring it down.

Now, we might disagree about WHAT the government should do to bring it down, or WHO in government should bring it down, or what is the best WAY to bring it down. But at least we had a factual basis to start.

And we didn't have to attack a person in order to disagree.

I miss that.

I miss that too, Lis. In today’s discourse, disagreement equals disdain. The real problem, though, as Robbie and you point out is the inability to agree on what is even demonstrably true.

And sadly, the incessant speculation emanating from the media feeds the divisiveness, imo.

It's how they make their money. Journalism pretty much died with Walter Cronkite.

I'm going to take some exception to that. The reporting out of the Washington Post and the New York Times over the past couple of years has been exceptional.

And the reporting of Matt Taibbi at Rolling Stone and other reporters at The Economist.

I meant in general. I have an online subscription to The Post and have had for some time. Also TIME magazine. Both are outstanding media outlets.

There are other fine print media outlets, but TV news programs IMO have pretty much gone to pot, having been taken over by the suits with MBAs who only care about the bottom line. TV is where most folks get their propaganda.

Well.... I suppose it depends on what you watch, Cooter. I consider Rachel Maddow "must-see TV" for a strong understanding about what is happening. Some programs are stronger than others.

Journalism is not only alive and well, Cooter. It's kicking. Let me recommend New Yorker. No public official is safe from New Yorker.

It's on my media bookmark. I have so many, but I can only keep up with a few. I even have Townhall bookmarked because they do have a few good contributors.

Keep in mind that I said the print media is who we have to rely on, not TV. That's in general.

Chris Hayes. Rachel Maddow. Lawrence O'Donnell. Joy Reid. Even Andrea Mitchell.

So I'm cynical when it comes to TV news programs. That goes back a long way. I think that Andrea is the only one who was on back when I was watching. With my faulty memory I could be wrong about that.

What I really appreciate about the journalists you've all mentioned is two things:

1. They're not "hair on fire" sensationalists and really do their work to check sources.

2. If they make a mistake, they admit it. Clearly. And when possible, they explain how the mistake was made. That goes a LONG way with me.

I love Rachel's historical backgrounds for her stories, and the way her stories are constructed.

Re: Media

I do, too, Belle. She really takes the time to fully explain what are complicated details, and she uses video and actual text from speeches and social media to back up what she is saying.

Last night, she was particularly good about pointing out what was speculation on her part, as opposed to solid reporting. I appreciate that, because it helps me to better understand where this news MIGHT be going and why it's important, and yet it separates her conjecture from what we know for fact.

She's good. emoticon
