Yep. He just needed to find an excuse.

The Mueller probe is as much about the rule of law as Russian meddling
It is in terrible danger

POWER corrupts, goes the old saw. Yet Donald Trump’s presidency is the opposite case. It reflects the still-dumbfounding reality that one of the world’s oldest democracies elected a fully formed rascal to its highest office. Mr Trump did not even try to hide his designs. He promised to run the country as he ran his family business, which would logically mean nepotistically, autocratically, with great regard for his personal interests and little for the rules. And so he has.

The president has bent anti-nepotism laws to put his daughter and son-in-law in the house whose first occupant, John Adams, hoped only to “do a little good”. He has retained his business interests and cloaked his finances in secrecy. He has spent a third of his time as president at his commercial properties. He persists in claiming to have or to deserve sweeping powers over Congress, the judiciary and the constitution no matter how often he is reminded that he does not. His example permeates his cabinet of grifters. Ben Carson’s $31,000 dining set, Ryan Zinke’s secretarial flag, Scott Pruitt’s 18-man security detail, and private jets all round, were imitations of Mr Trump’s greater vanities.

Only after Mr Trump has left office will a proper accounting of the damage he has done be possible. Yet the fallout from an FBI raid on the offices of his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, on April 9th could go some way to determining the extent of it. The raid appears to have sent Mr Trump hurtling towards the head-on collision with the rule of law that always seemed likelier than a trade or shooting war to define his presidency.

No one, save Mr Trump, represents the president’s tarnishing of American democracy more than Mr Cohen. An aggressive operator whose duties as a lawyer for the Trump Organisation allegedly included paying off his boss’s mistresses and threatening journalists (“I’m warning you, tread very !@#$ lightly, because what I’m going to do to you is going to be !@#$ disgusting,” he reportedly told one from the Daily Beast), he became ...

Trump lawyer Cohen did secret legal work for Sean Hannity, attorney says

The revelation came as a judge is deciding whether to allow federal prosecutors to sift through materials the FBI seized from the Trump attorney’s home.

By LAURA NAHMIAS and JOSH GERSTEIN | 04/16/2018 10:49 AM EDT Updated 04/16/2018 04:17 PM EDT

The legal battle over federal investigators' raids on President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen took an unexpected turn Monday as an attorney identified Fox News host Sean Hannity as one of Cohen's legal clients.

Cohen's attorneys had acknowledged publicly that he represented Trump and former Republican National Committee deputy finance chair Elliott Broidy in legal matters, but they had sought to avoid naming a third client. Under pressure from a judge, Cohen's attorney Todd Harrison named Hannity as the client in court on Monday.

The revelation came amid a pitched legal battle over access to files seized in the raids on Cohen's home and office last week and over whether the materials are protected by attorney-client privilege. Hannity's connection to Cohen comes after the conservative commentator — one of Trump's staunchest defenders — fiercely criticized federal officials for the raids, without disclosing his own connection.

It was not immediately clear what sort of legal work Cohen did for Hannity. The conservative media figure seemed taken aback by the disclosure as he addressed it on his syndicated radio program Monday afternoon.

"I will decide if I'm going to put out a statement here," Hannity said, before remarking on seeing coverage of his role unfolding on Fox News. "It's very strange to have my own television network have my name up on the lower third."

Later in his show, Hannity denied being a formal client of Cohen but acknowledged that the Trump lawyer provided some advice.
“Michael never represented me in any matter. I never retained him,” Hannity insisted. “But I occasionally have had brief discussions with him” on legal matters.

“It never, never involved a matter between me and another third party,” the TV and radio host said.

“Trump lawyer Cohen did secret legal work for Sean Hannity, attorney says”.

So much for the standard of ,”the mere appearance of impropriety”. Oh wait that only applies to the other guy. This must be what draining the swamp looks like. *GAG*

What's worse is the number of people who are supporting it after accusing Obama of it.

The gall is utterly astonishing. Republican members of the House are threatening Rosenstein with impeachment if he doesn't turn over documents from the Russia/Trump investigation, which they would turn over to Trump. And, of course, the GOP leadership will say and do nothing.

Trump allies press Rosenstein in private meeting in latest sign of tensions

by Robert Costa and Ellen Nakashima April 18 at 9:49 PM

Two of President Trump’s top legislative allies met with Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein this week to press him for more documents about the conduct of law enforcement officials involved in the Russia probe and the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email server, according to three people who were not authorized to speak publicly about the discussion.

Rosenstein’s meeting at his office Monday with Reps. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) came days after Meadows, an influential Trump confidant, warned Rosenstein that he could soon face impeachment proceedings or an effort to hold him in contempt of Congress if he did not satisfy GOP demands for documents.

Trump and Meadows spoke at some point after the meeting, the three people said, but they declined to share details of the exchange.

The visit by Meadows and Jordan — leading members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus — is the latest sign of the rising tensions between Trump’s inner circle and the Justice Department. Rosenstein, a veteran prosecutor, is confronting a torrent of criticism from Republicans and an uncertain future that puts special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s Russia probe at risk.

"Now who can argue with that? I think we're all indebted to Gabby Johnson for clearly stating what needed to be said. I'm particularly glad that these children were here today to hear that speech. Not only was it authentic frontier gibberish, it expressed a courage little seen in this day and age." -- Blazing Saddles
